After an 18-month stint competing against some of the world’s best in Hong Kong, Group 1-winning jockey Ben Thompson has returned to Australia — and wasted no time in reminding punters and connections of his class.

The 27-year-old hoop, who boasts over 800 career victories, made headlines in 2023 with a breakthrough Group 1 win in the Oakleigh Plate aboard Uncommon James. Now back in his Queensland base, Thompson has made an immediate impact.

In just his first few weeks back, he has booted home 7 winners from 22 rides, striking at an impressive 31.82%. These elite numbers have trainers and racing managers quickly adding his name back to their speed dial.

His winning haul spans tracks such as Sunshine Coast, Doomben, and Eagle Farm, riding for top stables including Tony Gollan, Stuart Kendrick, and Chris Waller. But it’s not just about the wins. Thompson has also been regularly in the money, with sharp race positioning and a calm, tactical approach under pressure becoming hallmarks of his return rides.

“I returned very excited to be back competing in Queensland. I’m extremely fortunate to be receiving great support from a wide variety of trainers and owners — I’m loving being home,” said Thompson speaking exclusively to iRace.

Reflecting on the riding landscape since his departure, he noted some changes.

“The riding ranks are very similar to when I left for Hong Kong, but James Orman is now riding there, and Michael Cahill has since retired. He’s now involved with Racing Queensland’s Apprentice Training Program.”

Thompson’s time in Hong Kong has left a mark on his riding, with experience at the highest level sharpening both his skills and mindset.

“I’ve returned to Australia confident that I’m a better jockey than I was before Hong Kong. The opportunity to compete with many of the world’s best riders was invaluable — it was an incredible challenge,” he said.

“I just focus on staying consistent with my preparation and performance. I’d love to ride in Melbourne and Sydney over the Spring Carnival if the opportunities come my way.”

With the spring racing season fast approaching, don’t be surprised to see Ben Thompson’s name appearing more frequently in the winners’ stall — and in the form guides across the country.
