Penang Racing Preview By Mark Lydeamore For 24 Sep

The Penang Turf Club will host another card on racing this Saturday featuring three Class 4 contests. The track rated soft for last Saturday’s program following some early afternoon showers and a definite track bias was prevalent favoring the outside runners. Hence most races were won by the backmarkers, which is unusual considering most of the on speed performers usually dominate on the tighter northern circuit.

From that meeting last weekend, DIRECTOR and GRAND CHOICE filled the quinella in a 1300m Class 4 contest and both are set for a rematch over 1200m (Race 6). GRAND CHOICE is second up and meets DIRECTOR slightly better at the weights this time around so a reverse to last Saturday’s result would not surprise. GENERAL NIX is experiencing his best season to date posting four wins this year, including three at Class 4 level. The six year old flashed home from last at the 400m to place third behind the inform High Water at Selangor a fortnight ago and looks suited returning to home turf. GOLDEN KING trialled well behind smart mare, Xena on Tuesday morning and the former Kiwi did not disgrace at his local debut a month ago.

KING RAVANA has a chance of returning to winning form in the 1700m Class 4 (Race 8) with the 52kg minimum. The six year old boasts an excellent record in Malaysia with 4 wins from 5 starts and returns to the venue where that four win streak started back in February. Although he finished 3rd in Selangor last start, he looks ideally placed at the weights. AIR BOSS steps up from his placing over 1300m here last week and has previously scored second up from the short break. LAGO DE COMO has been competitive without winning in this grade and closed off well when placed at Ipoh over 1300m last start. BLEU MARINE, also on the seven day back up, made up late ground from a wide barrier and is also suited by the rise in distance.
