Sunday’s bumper 10-race programme on Turffontein’s Standside track revolves around the Grade 3 TAB Jubilee Stakes, a pivotal Hollywoodbets Durban July qualifier that could determine the fate of several runners still hoping to force their way into South Africa’s premier race on 4 July.
While the spotlight naturally falls on the 1800m feature, astute punters may find the better betting opportunities elsewhere on a card that appears tailor-made for the powerful Sean Tarry yard and leading rider Craig Zackey, whose partnership could dominate proceedings from start to finish.
Tarry sends out a team capable of winning no fewer than six races and, given the stable’s current form, opposing many of them could prove an expensive exercise.
Zackey’s onslaught begins as early as Race 2 where Lady Harlequin looks overdue for a maiden success. The What A Winter filly has filled the runner-up berth in all three starts, including a commendable effort behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Get Up in Grade 3 company. That form reads exceptionally well in this context and Zackey should finally steer her into the winner’s enclosure over 1160m.
Tarry’s highly regarded Secret Fate can keep her unbeaten record intact in Race 4. The daughter of Master Of My Fate created a favourable impression when winning on debut over the same 1400m trip and, with the benefit of that experience under her belt, natural improvement should make her difficult to oppose under Keagan de Melo.
Punters may not have to wait long for another Tarry success. Prayersandpromises looks poised to capitalise on a return to 1400m in Race 5 after finishing an encouraging fourth over a sharper 1160m last time. The son of Gimmethegreenlight shaped as though he was crying out for this extra ground and Zackey can complete a quickfire stable double.
The Tarry-Zackey combination also holds a powerful hand in the Egoli Mile, the second leg of the Highveld Winter Series for three-year-olds. Fire Storm finished second to King Harald in the Listed Secretariat Stakes, the opening leg of the series, but now enjoys a 1kg pull at the weights with that rival. The Pathfork gelding is well positioned to reverse that form.
The day’s feature, the Grade 3 TAB Jubilee Stakes, presents one of the most intriguing betting puzzles on the card. Atticus Finch and Olivia’s Way are closely matched on the ratings and both warrant serious respect, but there is a strong case for siding with the latter.
Roy Magner’s mare remains on the fringes of the Durban July picture and may require a victory here to secure her place in the final field. Motivation, race conditions and profile all suggest she could be the value play in the feature.
Tarry’s grip on the meeting may tighten further in Race 8 when Grade 1 SA Classic hero Grand Empire returns from a 13-week break. The son of Vercingetorix faces a stern task at the weights but progressive three-year-olds often bridge such gaps through sheer improvement. His Classic victory suggested there is plenty more to come and Zackey reunites with a colt whose ceiling remains unknown.
The stable’s momentum could continue in Race 9 through the improving Tintin. The lightly raced Rafeef gelding lost little in defeat when runner-up over this course and distance last time, his first attempt at the mile. With that valuable experience now banked and racing off the same mark, he looks well placed to resume winning ways.
If the script unfolds as expected, Tarry may still have one final ace to play in the lucky last. Slender Silhouette appeals as another strong winning prospect after an encouraging return from a break. The Vercingetorix filly finished second on her handicap debut in stronger company and should strip considerably fitter for that outing.
Under De Melo, she has every chance of going one better and putting the finishing touches on what could be a red-letter afternoon for one of the Highveld’s most formidable operations.
The Jubilee Stakes will ultimately decide which July hopefuls remain in contention, but from a betting perspective Sunday may be remembered less for Durban July implications and more for another exhibition of Tarry’s remarkable strength in depth and Zackey’s relentless ability to convert opportunity into winners.
