September 16 Selangor Preview by Mark Lydeamore

Course A will be in operation with the rail in the true position for a big two days of racing this weekend culminating in the G1 Selangor Gold Cup on Sunday.

Saturday’s card features two Class 3 events including the 1400m Malaysia Day Stakes (Race 5) and features the return of progressive performer GOLDEN SPRINT (10), which capped off his last campaign with successive victories back in July. With 53kg to carry, the 6yo will clash with another galloper on the rise in the form of SHANG CHI (5), which completed the winning hat trick here two weeks ago. SHANG CHI (5) has never looked back since he was unplaced at his Malaysian debut in June and looks a genuine chance at his first start in Class 3 company. PERFECT (4) has been a model of consistency and is nearing another win after finishing runner up behind inform galloper and Selangor Cup aspirant, Leopard Eclipse here last weekend. STRONG N POWERFUL (2) is proven at this grade and will be racing over his favorite journey while LIMITLESS STOUT (6) was a Class 3 winner last start and will benefit from the apprentice claim. ANSU (9) won a weaker race on August 27 but was placed behind SHANG CHI (5) prior to that and could provide the value.

The 2023 Tabcorp Trophy (Race 8) appears more open of the two high grade events where WISHUPONASTAR (4) has a chance of bouncing back to winning form. WISHUPONASTAR (4) has established a handy record locally and drops back from his unplaced effort in the G1 Penang Sprint Trophy when beaten 6 lengths after racing on speed throughout. The 7yo is yet to miss a place in four starts at Class 3 grade and should prove hard to run down if he utilizes his early pace. GOLDEN SARDINE (3) will strip fitter from his first up performance while TITAN PEGASUS (1) is building a good record locally (3/6) and will be hard to beat again despite the rise in weight. HEADHUNTER (8) did not disgrace at his first Malaysian run in Ipoh just over a month ago and will drop a fraction in class here carrying a similar weight. DABBLE (10), a 4-time winner from 9 starts in the country, is racing in great form currently and should not be dismissed on the upgrade.
