South Africa Racing – Run As One looks a singular bet

Run As One can take advantage of a light weight to chalk up his third career victory at the Vaal on Tuesday.

The Mike de Kock-trained runner clearly has some talent as he has raced just seven times for two wins and three places, but in his last start, he appeared to be his own worst enemy.

The three-year-old son of Gimmethegreenlight found betting support in his first run back from a short layoff but he had to be coerced into the starting stalls and ended up too far back in the early part of this MR 88 Handicap over 1800m at the Vaal.

He did run on well into third place but when they got the finishing post, he was still 4.75 lengths adrift of winner Supreme Dance.

He lines up in a MR 90 Handicap over 2000m on this occasion and perhaps the extra distance will suit him a lot better.

He was gelded after just two start and there do not appear to have been any major behavioural issues in his next four starts until his last effort. Hopefully he will not give jockey Muzi Yeni any hassles this time.

The main threat to Run As One appears to be Imperial Master from the Stuart Pettigrew yard. The four-year-old Mater Of My Fate gelding has finished third in his last three races and will be looking for his third career win.

He would have to give 5.5kg to Run As One but that will be diminished as he has a 2.5kg claiming apprentice in the irons.

However, his best efforts have come over 1600m so the distance has to be a concern.

The best-performed runner is Captain Chorus but he has the opposite problem. He has been competing over in features races over long distances and Lucky Houdalakis’ charge could find this trip a touch on the short side.

But he will have former champion jockey Warren Kennedy in the irons.
