South Africa Racing – Domeyer to finish on a high

Richard Fourie stole the show with a five-timer on last Wednesday’s eight-race Kenilworth card. Another leading rider, Aldo Domeyer – while unlikely to match that number – should close out Cape Town’s 2021 racing calendar with several winners of his own at the last midweek meeting of the year at Kenilworth on Wednesday 29 December.

Readers may remember that Sugar Mountain was confidently tipped to deliver the goods last week and Candice-Bass Robinson’s charge obliged under Domeyer, who also had two fourths on the card from three rides.

Race 2 and Coup De Grace colt Charlie Squadron is Domeyer’s first port of call and, after two seconds including at his last start over 1400m, it should be a winning one.

Bass-Robinson’s charge has made good improvement for the addition of blinkers to his racing equipment and the return to 1200m will also stand him in good stead.

What A Winter gelding Arctic Drift may have fluffed his lines when taken to the Eastern Cape but bounced back to form under a big weight in a strong 1400m contest last time out. He was dropped out from a wide draw but finished the race off well, suggesting the step back up to 1600m (the distance over which he registered his last career win three starts back) in Race 4 should be to his liking.

Followers of the formidable Domeyer and Bass-Robinson team could recoup their Christmas spend (and then some!) by adding to that double and including Ma Black in a jockey-trainer treble.

This four-year-old daughter of What A Winter got the better of Chilly Winter in two previous meetings before the latter took advantage of a favourable weight turnaround last time, handing Ma Black a first defeat of this campaign and denying her a hat-trick of wins.

Bass-Robinson holds a strong hand in Race 8 and it is encouraging to note that Domeyer retains the ride aboard the lightly raced and progressive filly who, on the evidence of her last start, should now enjoy going the extra 200m with 2kg less to carry.
