Johannesburg, South Africa
First run in 1887, the Betway Summer Cup is the centrepiece of the South African spring racing calendar and the Highveld’s most prestigious Grade 1 handicap. Staged over 2000m on Turffontein’s testing Standside track, the R6 million feature brings together some of the country’s leading thoroughbreds for one of Johannesburg’s biggest days of racing.
With a history stretching back to 1887, the Summer Cup has long been one of the defining races of the South African season. Unlike a weight-for-age contest, the Grade 1 feature is run as a handicap, with horses carrying different weights according to their ratings — adding another layer to the challenge over Turffontein’s demanding 2000m.

Home to the Summer Cup, Turffontein’s Standside course is regarded as one of South Africa’s toughest racing circuits. Its sweeping layout and demanding uphill section place a premium on stamina, balance and the ability to sustain a run.
