Saturday’s nine-race Turffontein Standside meeting offers plenty of betting opportunities, with trainers Fabian Habib and Tony Peter appearing to hold the strongest hands. Habib’s leading hopes will both be partnered by Muzi Yeni, a combination worth following.
Habib’s first major chance comes with Be All You Can Be in Race 3 over 1400m. The lightly raced daughter of Vercingetorix showed promise on debut before disappointing in her next two starts. However, she returned to form when runner-up in first-time blinkers last month and now adds a compression hood. With Yeni taking the ride, she looks capable of breaking her maiden.
Yeni also reunites with King’s Express in the Race 4 Pinnacle Stakes over 1800m. The pair have enjoyed an excellent partnership, winning twice and finishing outside the first four only once in seven starts. The veteran gelding meets The Equator on slightly better weight terms after finishing just 1.7 lengths behind him last time and could reverse the form with his preferred rider back aboard.
Tony Peter also has two leading contenders. Vibe SA is a proven course-and-distance specialist in Race 5 over 1160m, boasting two wins and six additional placings from eight starts. After finishing strongly into fourth behind Max The Magician last time, he looks an attractive each-way option under Kyle Strydom.
Peter’s other standout is Bay Empire in the closing 1400m handicap. The son of Fire Away impressed when winning over 1600m at this venue 18 days ago and, despite a three-point ratings rise, remains well treated. The drop back to 1400m should not pose a problem and he looks capable of completing a winning double for the stable.
With Habib and Peter both holding realistic double chances, and Muzi Yeni reunited with two horses he knows well, proven trainer-jockey combinations may provide the key to success at Saturday’s Highveld meeting.
