The World Descends on Melbourne: The Race That Stops the Planet

For generations, the Melbourne Cup has been known as “the race that stops a nation.” But this year, that title may need an upgrade, because the world is coming to a standstill for the 2025 Melbourne Cup, as global contenders converge on Flemington for Australia’s most celebrated sporting spectacle. From every corner of the racing world, champions have journeyed to Melbourne, chasing the ultimate prize in staying glory. It’s not just Australia’s biggest race, it’s a true world championship of horse endurance, courage, and staying class.

Flying the flag for the United States, the Bill Mott-trained Parchment Party arrives with serious credentials. Guided by legendary jockey John Velazquez, the American stayer punched his ticket to Melbourne with victory in the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup Stakes (2816m) at Saratoga back in June. Now, fully acclimatised to Australian conditions, he’s ready to test himself against the best the world has to offer. The Irish are no strangers to Cup glory and this year Joseph O’Brien returns with Al Riffa, aiming for his third Melbourne Cup after triumphs with Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020). Joining him are Simon & Ed Crisford from Newmarket, who bring the in-form Meydaan to Australia with eyes firmly set on the famous cup. Germany is also represented, with top trainer Henk Grewe sending his talented stayer Flatten The Curve, to be partnered by the accomplished Thore Hammer-Hansen. And from the powerhouse racing nation of Japan comes Chevalier Rose, to be ridden by internationally renowned jockey Damian Lane, adding another layer of intrigue to an already world-class field.

The stage is set for a global showdown as every nation holds its breath. On the first Tuesday in November, the eyes of the world will once again turn to Flemington, where the best stayers from across the planet will battle for ultimate glory. One thing’s for sure: the Australians will need to bring their absolute best, because this year, the Melbourne Cup isn’t just stopping a nation… it’s stopping the world.
