Mercantour can finish his challenge

Only seven runners will contest the final leg of the Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge over 1600m at Fairview on Friday, with Mercantour well placed to clinch victory and the R250,000 bonus.

The Alan Greeff-trained gelding won the first two legs of the series over 1200m and 1400m, showing admirable consistency on the Polytrack, where he boasts four wins and two placings from six starts. Though winless in three turf runs over 1600m, his form on this surface and partnership with Richard Fourie, who has guided him to three victories, make him a major contender.

The main danger could be Bingwa from Gavin Smith’s yard. The seasoned eight-year-old, well treated at the weights, has shown flashes of his old ability and could be dangerous if allowed to dictate terms. Brendan James, another in-form runner, has won his last two starts impressively since the addition of blinkers and a return to the Poly, though he faces tougher opposition this time.

Greeff also saddles Mr Fox, who has a strong record over this track and trip and looks his stable’s next best chance. Stablemates Strathclyde, Wecangoallnight, and The Africa House will need improvement to feature.

Another race of note is Race 7, a Graduation Plate over 1400m, where Guy Gibson and Vulcanite stand out at the weights. Guy Gibson, runner-up to Mercantour in an earlier leg, skips this race’s series finale but remains a major player. However, Vulcanite, who receives a 4kg advantage, could be the one to beat. The Erupt filly has faced strong company without winning but may thrive with a switch to the Polytrack and a new stable.
