Kenilworth Preview – 22 June

RACE BY RACE PREVIEWS: KENILWORTH@2024.06.22

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 1, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R135.000, 11:35GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky opener. LATE DECEMBER and CUMBRE VIEJA have shown promise up the straight and on pedigree are likely to improve for the step up to this distance. The former finished behind SAIL THE SEAS who should improve with the benefit of an encouraging/eye-catching debut 2nd (over 1200m) under his belt. The latter’s wide draw is a slight concern, as is the case with SOUND OF THE SEA whose form and experience over this trip should stand him in good stead. KRIM improved to finish 2nd over 1200m last time and will be competitive if building on that progress from an inside gate. Respect MYSTIC MAJESTY.

Selections:

#14 Sail The Seas, #1 Late December, #11 Sound Of The Sea, #4 Krim

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 2, Gallops, 1500m, Turf, R250.000, 12:10GMT+2

Race Summary: Listed race for 2yo fillies. POLYNOMIAL outran long odds to make a winning debut over 1200m and is open to any amount of improvement stepping up to this distance. SAHARA CAT won back-to-back 1000m races before a 15-week absence and is another to open progress over this extended trip. MISS WORLD has finished 2nd in consecutive 1200m races against male opposition, so shouldn’t be taken lightly back against her own sex. Preference, however, is for KINDA WONDERFUL who caught the eye when running on strongly to finish 2nd over 1400m against males last time and the extra 100m will be to her liking.

Selections:

#4 Kinda Wonderful, #2 Sahara Cat, #6 Miss World, #1 Polynomial

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 3, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R110.000, 12:45GMT+2

Race Summary: Trappy. DEVILISHLYGORGEOUS hasn’t been seen for 16 weeks but showed enough in 2 of 3 sprints to warrant respect on her reappearance. Stablemate PINK MOON fits a similar profile and will also enjoy reverting to this shorter trip. Well-bred youngster HUSH MONEY would’ve come on appreciably in the 14 weeks since her introduction, so is best kept safe with improvement expected on her return. SPIRIT GUIDE has been threatening to exit the maiden and needn’t improve much to open her account. ANASA’S BOMB caught the eye over 1400m when last seen and shouldn’t be underestimated. Watch the first-timers!

Selections:

#7 Spirit Guide, #12 Champagne Kisses, #4 Hush Money, #11 Omikami

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 4, Gallops, 1100m, Turf, R120.000, 13:20GMT+2

Race Summary: Wide open. FIRST MASTERPIECE improved considerably to win consecutive course-and-distance outings and a 4-point penalty may not be enough to halt her momentum after a 10-week break. GIMMETHATPEARL hasn’t been seen for 23 weeks but is unexposed and open to improvement on her return. Both LOVE SHACK and last-start winner SHE’S MY CAPTAIN have the form and experience at this level to fight for victory too. NIGHT VIGIL returned to form off her current mark and will be a factor with a repeat of that performance. SILVER SCREEN and improving last-start maiden winner BECKY SHARP aren’t taken lightly.

Selections:

#1 First Masterpiece, #5 She’s My Captain, #4 Love Shack, #11 Night Vigil

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 5, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R135.000, 13:55GMT+2

Race Summary: Best-weighted PORQUE TE VAS is 3kg better off with last-start conqueror MOJO MAN, who benefited from the refitting of blinkers. The latter has proven most effective in the headgear over this course and distance so it could pay to side with him again despite a 6-point penalty. ROD THE MOD and THE CHARLESTON are also weighted to pose more of a threat on these revised terms. DEAN STREET, who returned to form off a higher mark last time, and class-dropper TOUGH TERRAIN have won at this level so warrant respect. Last-start winners NORDIC CHIEF and SWIFT ACTION ought to remain competitive too.

Selections:

#9 Mojo Man, #1 Porque Te Vas, #10 The Charleston, #2 Nordic Chief

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 6, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R200.000, 14:30GMT+2

Race Summary: SUGAR MOUNTAIN and ZAPATILLAS are closely matched on the form of a recent 1400m meeting. Both were resuming after respective absences and would’ve tightened up since, so they should have a say in the outcome. RAPIDASH made no impression last time in a 1950m Grade 3 but will enjoy reverting to this trip in his peak outing – don’t write him off. SACHDEV, FUTURE PRINCE and PORT LOUIS have a bit to find on those rivals but are dangerous to discount. A bigger threat, however, is likely to come from Gold Rush runner-up COASTAL COMMANDER who impressed when winning on his return from a break. Tricky!

Selections:

#8 Sugar Mountain, #9 Rapidash, #3 Zapatillas, #6 Coastal Commander

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 7, Gallops, 1500m, Turf, R500.000, 15:05GMT+2

Race Summary: A quality renewal of this 2yo Grade 3 in which Vaughan Marshall holds a strong hand with 4 of the 8 runners, headed by exciting ONE STRIPE who has won back-to-back Grade 3 sprints. He is likely to prove even better stepped up in trip – being a son of One World out of a mare who won from 2200m to 2450m, including the Listed Spook Express. Stablemates ALL OUT FOR SIX, whose form/experience over 1400m will stand him in good stead, and smart speedster TALK TO THE MASTER are good value to fill the Exacta/Trifecta berths. MAURITIUS KESTREL, EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN and RAMA FORSECA complete the shortlist.

Selections:

#1 One Stripe, #3 All Out For Six, #7 Mauritius Kestrel, #6 Talk To The Master

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 8, Gallops, 1100m, Turf, R135.000, 15:40GMT+2

Race Summary: Wide open. SOUTHERN SKIES has found a new lease on life after relocating to Cape Town. She wasn’t winning out of turn last time (over 1200m) and with improvement likely in first-time headgear could be worth siding with, even under a 6-point penalty. Familiar foes NORDIC QUEST, WINTER RAINFALL and KINKY BOOTS renew rivalry and weighted to pose more of a threat off their unchanged marks. Unexposed KYALAMI GIRL is also likely to make her presence felt given the strength and consistency of her form (includes a last-start 4th against male opposition). GIRL LIKE US and KNOCKOUT aren’t discounted.

Selections:

#10 Southern Skies, #2 Nordic Quest, #14 Winter Rainfall, #5 Kyalami Girl

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 9, Gallops, 1950m, Turf, R135.000, 16:15GMT+2

Race Summary: Veteran mare FLOWER OF SAIGON is the best-weighted runner but is held on form. TIME FOR LOVE is also favourably treated by the conditions and should confirm her superiority over RAINBOW LORIKEET (1kg worse off), having finished 1.40 lengths ahead of that rival over 1800m last time out. NAVY STRENGTH and OTTO LUYKEN are closely matched on the form of a recent 1950m Grade 3 but the former should again have the measure of his familiar foe on better weight terms. BLUE BAY is open to improvement stretching out to this trip. MARSHALL FIELD and CORONATION aren’t making up the numbers.

Selections:

#6 Time For Love, #5 Rainbow Lorikeet, #9 Navy Strength, #7 Otto Luyken

Kenilworth, 22.06.2024, Race 10, Gallops, 2200m, Turf, R105.000, 16:55GMT+2

Race Summary: BATON ROUGE has found his niche beyond a mile and given the manner of his dominant victory over 2000m last month, this extended trip could unlock further progress. MOHANDAS, SUDDEN SONG, MISTER MONOCLE and LOCKHEEDLIGHTNING have a bit to find on that form but are weighted to get closer. DAIMYO, as a son of Grade 2 Oaks winner Juxtapose (also won the Grade 1 SA Fillies’ Classic), is likely to enjoy/improve over this extended trip and could turn the tables on 4kg better terms (for a 3.30-length beating). IGNATIUS has rediscovered his form/consistency and should also have a say in the finish.

Selections:

#9 Ignatius, #2 Baton Rouge, #6 Daimyo, #5 Mister Monocle

Best Win: #1 ONE STRIPE

Best Value Bet: #8 SUGAR MOUNTAIN

Best Longshot: #8 SUGAR MOUNTAIN
