Race Preview
R1 – PRIX DE SAINT-EMILION – 1900m (a1m 1/4) – TURF – Class 3 – Flat – EUR € 19,000
1. PIANO MAN – 4th over 2000m in a Class 4 race last time on February 19th. Ought to be in the shake-up.
2. GRECIAN BONANZA – Nice 3rd two runs ago over 1600m in a Class 2 handicap on January 17th. Ought to be involved.
3. MISSOURI – 5th two runs ago at Chantilly in a Class 3 race, won three claimers in the Autumn, the latter at Nancy over 1400m in October. Needs a few to falter.
4. FAMOSO – Won last time at Tarbes in a maiden over 1500m on October 14th. Can make presence felt.
5. LIMESY – 2nd three runs ago over 1900m at this track on November 19th in a handicap. Outside place chance.
6. NIKOLAJ – Credible 3rd at Toulouse 12 days ago in a Class 3 handicap over 2000m. Hard to ignore.
7. HENRY THE LION – 4th two runs back at Marseille Borely over 1800m in a handicap on October 31st. Capable of having a say.
8. COCO DU HAUT – 3rd two starts ago over 2000m in a Class 2 race at Compiegne in October. Might find this difficult.
9. INDIAN GOLD – Unplaced last time, 4th before that over 1900m at Chantilly on November 14th in a handicap. Player.
10. NOROLLES – Has five unplaced runs since a 2nd placed effort at Agen in mid-May in a Class 3 race. Hard to fancy.
Summary: GRECIAN BONANZA (2) has been running well of late, he was a a decent third in a Class 2 handicap two runs back at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in January and should be good enough to score in this. NIKOLAJ (6) is a threat and shaped well when third in a Class 3 handicap last time at Toulouse 12 days ago. FAMOSO (4) broke his maiden last time and will be in a confident frame of mind after that success. INDIAN GOLD (9) makes up the shortlist.

1. INSTRUIT – Three unplaced runs of late, 4th before that over 1100m at La Teste in a Class 2 race in late August. Hard to include.
2. HURRICANE – Nice 2nd last time at Pau over 1400m on February 2nd in a Class 3 race. Live contender.
3. NIGHT OF LIGHTNING – Unplaced on the last two runs, won before that over 1600m at Compiegne on June 9th in a maiden. Outside place chance.
4. REVE DE VALLARSA – Fair 4th over 1200m at Pau in a Class 3 handicap on February 18th. Among the leading chances.
5. JONH SIX – Three unplaced runs of late, 3rd before that in a Class 1 race at Pau over 1400m on November 6th. Needs to bounce back to form.
6. ONYXKA – 5th in a Class 3 race last time on February 19th over 1500m. One to pay attention too.
7. OXIANA – Won two runs ago on the PSF over 1500m on December 19th in a Class 4 race. Needs a few to falter.
8. GIFT OF THE G – Won three runs ago over 1600m at this track on November 25th in a Class 3 race. Can not be ruled out.
9. EL TORERO – Unplaced last time, 3rd at Pau before that on January 31st in a Class 3 handicap. Others rate higher.
10. LARIS – Decent 2nd at Pau over 1600m on January 31st in a Class 3 handicap when last seen. Form pick.
11. GALILODGE – 4th at Pau over 1600m in a Class 3 handicap on December 10th when last racing. Opposable.
12. MYBOYFRIEND – Won last time at Pau over 1200m in a Class 3 handicap on February 18th. One for the each way backers.
13. RAPIDO PRESTO – Fair 3rd at Toulouse in early February in a Class 4 race over 1600m when last seen. Place chance.
14. WABAL – Five unplaced runs since scoring at this track over 1600m on March 3rd 2023. Needs to get back on track.
15. SILVER SILENT – 4th two runs ago at Agen on October 1st in a Class 4 race over 1850m. Looks vulnerable.
16. ATLANTA – Three runs since finishing 2nd over 1500m on September 24th at Madrid(ESP). Hard to recommend.
Summary: HURRICANE (2) has solid claims to score after a good second last time at Pau in a Class 3 race over 1400m last month. LARIS (10) will do his best to make life difficult for the selection. He faired well at Pau when second in late January over 1600m in a Class 3 handicap. GIFT OF THE G (8) was a winner three starts ago at this track and ought to be on the premises. MYBOYFRIEND (12) is also one to be considered.

1. NOIRE DESIRE – 4th at Tarbes in a Class 4 race on February 23rd over 2100m. Needs more to be on the premises.
2. JUREER – Nice 4th at Tarbes in a Class 4 race last time on February 23rd over 2100m. Ought to be thereabouts.
3. KENDY TIME – Unplaced on several of late, the latter outing was over 1600m at Saint-Cloud on November 17th. Pass over.
4. MON RICIN – 2nd last time over 2400m in a Class 4 race at Pornichet on February 22nd. More is required in a better race.
5. GOLD KAFE – Unplaced last time, 3rd before that over 2100m at Pornichet in a Class 3 race on December 1st. Makes little appeal.
6. PLATEADO – Has several unplaced runs since a win over 3000m at Dax on September 9th in a Class 3 handicap. Opposable.
7. CHARM KING – Ran well when 5th at this track over 1400m in a Class 4 handicap on February 22nd when last seen . Can be the one to beat.
8. MONT STEELE – Three unplaced runs since a win at La Teste in a Class 3 handicap over 3000m on August 3rd. Needs to get back on form.
9. XARUN – 5th last time at Tarbes in a Class 4 race on February 23rd over 2100m when last seen. Capable of being involved.
10. DAFNE – Two unplaced runs of late, 3rd before that over 1950m on October 21st in a handicap. Ought to be in the shake-up.
11. CADE’S – 3rd at Tarbes over 2100m in a Class 4 race on February 23rd when last racing. Others rate higher.
12. LE CORSAIRE – Unplaced on the last two runs, 3rd before that over 2000m at Angouleme on October 29th on debut. Handicap debut and can make the frame.
13. CENTAURUS – Unplaced last time, 3rd before that at Angouleme on November 12th over 2000m in a Class 4 race. Hard to recommend.
14. LANCEUR D’ALERTE – Fair effort when 2nd at Tarbes last time over 2100m on February 23rd in a Class 4 race. One to pay attention too.
15. BALEGRIO – Decent 3rd at Tarbes last time over 21oom in a Class 4 race in late February. Among the leading chances.
16. KARKHOV – Won two runs ago over 2000m at Pau in a Class 3 race on February 4th in a Class 3 race. Unreliable.
Summary: CHARM KING (7) is the tentative selection in an open handicap. He ran well at this track last time and is more than capable of scoring. DAFNE (10) warrants respect and should be involved at the business end. LANCEUR D’ALERTE (14) could be one for the each-way backers to latch on to. BALEGRIO (15) is also one to consider from an each-way perspective after a credible run last time at Tarbes.

R4 – PRIX FRANCOIS MATHET – 2100m (a1m 1/4) – TURF – Listed – Flat – EUR € 55,000
1. CALANDAGAN – Finished 3rd on debut over 1600m on turf at Deauville and made the expected improvement to win well over 1900m on PSF at Chantilly in October. Open to any amount of progress on his reappearance.
2. GEORGIAN STAR – Confirmed the promise of his debut 2nd over 1900m on PSF at Deauville by winning over that distance on the PSF at Chantilly on 23 February. Open to further progress on turf. 3. TRAFALGAR SQUARE – Has not finished worse than 2nd in five outings, winning twice including a 2150m Class 1 conditions race by six lengths at Cagnes on 17 February. High on the shortlist.
4. HOLY SEE – Won on debut over 1700m on PSF at Pornichet in January and confirmed that promise by finishing 2nd over 1800m on PSF at Chantilly on 9 February. Holds Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris entries.
5. LORD OF WAR – Improved with each start on turf in 2023, winning over 1700m at MarseilleBorely in October. Finished an encouraging 2nd over 1600m on PSF at Cagnes on his reappearance on 19 February – not taken lightly.
6. BRIGHT PICTURE – Highly regarded, unbeaten Intello colt who won over 1600m on the turf at Deauville first time out and on PSF over the same distance at Chantilly when last seen on 14 November. Can remain undefeated.
Summary: Undefeated in two appearances, BRIGHT PICTURE (6) seems capable of preserving his 100% record in this Listed event with improvement expected on his reappearance. CALANDAGAN (1), gelded after a promising debut, impressed when winning in late October and is another open to any amount of progress on his return to action. TRAFALGAR SQUARE (3) hasn’t finished worse than 2nd in his five outings and is also likely to play a leading role on the evidence of his impressive recent runaway success at Cagnes. HOLY SEE (4) has no references on turf but holds Classic entries, so cannot be underestimated either.

R5 – PRIX OMNIUM II – 1600m (a1m) – TURF – Listed – Flat – EUR € 55,000
1. RAMADAN – High-class two-year-old last season and confirmed as much by finishing 4th in the Group I Critérium de Saint-Cloud over 2000m on this course when last seen on 22 October. Can make a winning reappearance.
2. GOWAY – Consistent performer who has only once finished worse than 3rd in 13 starts, winning twice – references on both turf and PSF. Supplemented for this after finishing 3rd over 2150m at Cagnes on 17 February.
3. ROCK THE KASBAH – Debut winner over 1400m at Clairefontaine last year and didn’t go unnoticed when finishing 3rd on PSF in his reappearance over 1600m at Chantilly on 23 February. Ought to have tightened up since.
4. GREY MAN – Won three times last year and finished 2nd twice before blotting his copybook with a disappointing 7th of 7 runners in the Group I Critérium International over this course and distance on 22 October. Respect.
5. ESTONIA MOON – The only maiden in the lineup, having finished 5th in all three outings – the latest over 2150m in a Class 1 conditions race at Cagnes on 17 February behind GOWAY (2)
Summary: With entries in both the Group I Poule d’Essai and Group I Prix du Jockey Club,
RAMADAN (1) is likely to garner most of the support in this Listed event, especially having finished 4th in the Group I Criterium de Saint-Cloud over 2000m on this course as a two-year-old last season. GRAY MAN (4) is also likely to be engaged in those spring Classics and is likely to prove his main danger. ROCK THE KASBAH (3) didn’t go unnoticed on his reappearance and has the means to stake a claim with improved fitness on his side. Supplemented GOWAY (2) completes the shortlist.

R6 – PRIX LA CAMARGO – 1600m (a1m) – TURF – Listed – Flat – EUR € 55,000
1. SPARKLING PLENTY – Debut winner over 1700m at Marseille-Borély and confirmed that
promise by winning a Listed race over the same course and distance. Won on her reappearance over 1600m on PSF at Chantilly on 23 February.
2. NEVERCRY – Caught the eye when finishing 3rd on debut over 1900m on the PSF at Deauville before finishing 2nd at Chantilly on PSF over the same distance on 23 February. Open to improvement on the turf.
3. SHIFFRIN – Won the Group III Prix de Condé over 1800m at Chantilly in September before finishing a creditable 6th in the Group I Critérium de Saint-Cloud on this course over 2000m on 22 October. High on the shortlist.
4. CHIC COLOMBINE – Prolific two-year-old, winning four of seven starts in England last year including a 1400m sales race at Goodwood before finishing 4th in the 1400m Group III Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket on 13 October.
5. DARLING DARLING – Consistent in four starts as a two-year-old in 2023 but is held by SHIFFRIN (3) on the form of the Group III Prix de Condé behind that rival. Was last seen finishing 3rd over 1900m at Bordeaux on 28 October.
6. ECLAIRE LA VIE – Progressive last-start winner with sound references, including that winning reappearance over 1400m at Bordeaux on 22 February.
7. SANS VOIX – Won of the Listed Grand Critérium de Bordeaux last fall before finishing 5th in the Group III Prix Miesque over 1400m at Chantilly when last seen on 27 October. Not to be underestimated.
Summary: SPARKLING PLENTY (1) won at this level in just her second start last year and
preserved her 100% record with an impressive comeback victory on the PSF at Chantilly last month. She is capable of winning again ahead of Group I commitments in the Poule d’Essai and Prix de Diane. SHIFFRIN (3), a Group III winner last year, has the means to fight for victory along with the British filly CHIC COLOMBINE (4) who wouldn’t be traveling to take up this engagement for tourist purposes only. Winner of a Listed race last fall, SANS VOIX (7) completes the shortlist.

R7 – PRIX DE LA GLORIETTE – 2400m (a1m 1/2) – TURF – Class 2 Divided Handicap – Flat – EUR € 53,000
1. SUNFAST – A two-time Quinté+ winner in full possession of his means, having won a 2500m Quinte+ at Cagnes on 21 February. Ought to remain competitive under a 3,5kg penalty.
2. ORION ROCK – Comfortable on rain-affected ground and has already won at Quinte+ level, albeit off a lower (2,5kg) mark. Finished 6th over 3000m at Angers on 22 November but his limits remain unknown.
3. TARAJAL – Capable filly with sound references, although has achieved her best titles against females only. Has not been seen since finishing 12th in a 2500m Quinte+ on the PSF at Deauville on 16 November.
4. MOONWALK STEP – Ultra-consistent veteran with an impressive record of 94 starts and 11 wins, including one at this level. Has a penchant for heavy ground and must be respected here having finishing 5th in a 2000m Quinte+ on this course last time out (7 March).
5. QATAR RIVER – Veteran nine-year-old gelding who has recently joined Joséphine Soudan’s stable and this represents no more than a test for new connections. Finished 7th in a 2500m PSF claimer at Deauville on 3 February.
6. WOOT CITY – Regular at this level and absent since finishing 7th in a 2800m Quinte+ at ParisLongchamp but has a habit of making thunderous reappearance. Efficient on heavy ground too, can’t be underestimated.
7. MORPHEWAN – Has been rejuvenated in two starts since joining Patrice Cottier this winter, finishing 3rd in a Quinte+ over 2150m at Cagnes before winning a 2500m handicap at that venue on 21 February. Penalised 2,5kg.
8. LORNE – Made an encouraging start to her career with Mario Baratti and has recently joined Adrien Fouassier’s stable after finishing an encouraging 5th in a 2700m PSF claimer at Chantilly on 29 February. Dark horse.
9. CUNCERTO – Has finished 3rd in each of his two outings this year, both in Quinte+ races at Cagnes off his current mark – the most recent of which was over 2500m on 21 February. Not taken lightly.
10. WUKHANN – Ultra-consistent handicapper with a penchant for heavy ground – has not finished worse than 5th in 10 outings on heavy ground. Finished 5th in a 2500m Quinte+ on turf at Cagnes on 21 February.
11. CHEEK TO CHEEK – Finished an encouraging 5th in a 2150m Quinté+ at Cagnes on 23
January before a disappointing 3rd in a 2200m claimer at Fontainebleau on 6 March off an unchanged mark. For another day.
12. WEMATCH – Consistent five-year-old whose good form in handicaps this year is encouraging. Won at Pornichet over 2400m on PSF before finishing 2nd on turf at Toulouse over the same trip on 6 February – Quinte+ debut.
13. REVENTADOR – Consistent veteran handicapper with sound references, including a 6th over 2200m at ParisLonchamp at this level back in May 2023. Was last seen finishing 3rd in a 2350m handicap at Strasbourg in November.
14. ULTRASOUND – Has blown hot and cold recently in handicaps, claimers and conditions races at a lower level for several months now. Finished a modest 9th in a 2700m PSF handicap at Chantilly on 16 February.
15. PENTAOUR – Consistent performer who enjoyed a fairly productive 2023 at a lower level, albeit without success. Has references on heavy ground, including a last-start 2nd over 2000m on this course on 24 November.
16. SNUGGLES – Well-beaten 11th in her only Quinte+ appearance over 2100m on this course in October and unplaced in all three subsequent outings, including an 1800m conditions race on the PSF at Chantilly on 29 February.
Summary: Battle-hardened, despite his young age, ORION ROCK (2) beat quality older rivals in the Prix de la Ville de Toulouse, notably the excellent Homo Deus. Confirmed over this distance and in the Quinte+ category, he seems capable of making a winning reappearance here. However, it is not a foregone conclusion against the likes of WOOT CITY (6), who will greatly appreciate heavy ground, MORPHEWAN (7), whose level has been raised since joining Patrice Cottier, and last-start scorer SUNFAST (1) who is currently in full possession of his. LORNE (8) made an encouraging reappearance in a claimer and has the means to please new connections. WUKHANN (10) ran better a race last time than his finishing indicates and is another to consider.
