October 22 Selangor Preview by Mark Lydeamore

The 1400m Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup (Race 8) will headline the ten race program at Selangor Turf Club this Sunday and the minor place getters in the recent G1 Selangor Gold Cup should provide an interesting clash. AWESOME STORM (1) and BERRY BLISS (2) have drawn good barriers for the RM100,000 feature and both should play a part in the finish. BERRY BLISS (2) has progressed to the next level this year following his G1 victory in the Penang Sprint Trophy in July and will prove hard to beat. AWESOME STORM (1) has been Malaysia’s premier sprinter for the past couple of years and his run in the Selangor Cup was excellent considering he drew barrier 14 in stepping up to the mile for the first time. Both KONG FU PANDA (12) and SINCERELY (7) finished just outside the placings in the group feature and both must be given genuine chances at the weights. XENA (4) and NO FUN NO GAIN (13) ran 1st and 2nd respectively in an easier race at Ipoh recently and both gallopers are capable of causing the minor upset. The value selection going by statistics could be 8yo mare STREETS OF FIRE (3) which has an excellent record of four from six when produced second up and will have the services of leading apprentice R Nuqman.

GAMESTONKS (2) has taken all before him this campaign as he shoots for his fourth successive victory in the 1100m Sports Toto Stakes (Race 6). The 7yo has led throughout at his past three runs and has outsprinted his rivals when challenged on each occasion. BIG DOCTOR (3) is also a quick beginner who can match it with GAMESTONKS (2) early and is coming off a last start 2nd behind the talented Awesome Storm on August 19. The 7yo has a record of four from seven first up and is capable of upsetting the likely favourite. HEARTENING FLYER (7) is an interesting addition for the Richard Lines stable and will make his local debut coming off an eleven month break. The 7yo has not raced since finishing unplaced in the G3 Kranji Mile last November but his excellent first up record (5:3-2-0) will place him in good stead for a forward showing. PROOF PERFECT (5) lowered the colours of GAMESTONKS (2) here back in July and also possesses a handy record when resuming. GINGERELLA (1) is an honest mare who continues to bear the brunt of big weights but remains competitive at this level and is one for the exotics.
