Jockey Mark Ewe has been slammed with a one-year disqualification over his handling of ROYAL FLUSH in race 4 of the card at Selangor on Sunday, 24 September.

The stewards conducted an inquiry regarding Ewe’s riding of ROYAL FLUSH, which finished a neck runner-up to Zilfikar in a Class 5 A handicap over 1175m, during the straight. Testimonies were provided by both Ewe and Trainer HY Cheng.

After reviewing the evidence and assessing ROYAL FLUSH’s performance, the Stewards charged Jockey M Ewe under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that ROYAL FLUSH was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing in that he had failed to ride the mare out in the straight from the 200M mark.

It’s not the first time in Ewe’s career that he has been disqualified for the same duration. The Penang-born rider, who was the champion apprentice at Kranji from 2008 to 2010, faced a one-year disqualification for his handling of Brian Dean-trained Abyss in a Class 5 race on April 20, 2012.

Ewe is disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from 29 September 2023 and to expire on 28 September 2024, both dates inclusive. He was also fined RM50,000.
