South African trainer Tony Millard has relinquished his trainer’s license, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club confirming the retirement last Wednesday.

Millard joined the Hong Kong training ranks in 2000 and was quick to stamp his authority by winning the Hong Kong Derby with Keen Winner in his first season. Most notably, however, Millard will be remembered for training two-time Horse of the Year, Ambitious Dragon.

Not afraid to travel a horse when the opportunity presented itself, Millard took Hong Kong’s star mare Sweet Sanette to Royal Ascot, where she finished third in the G1 King’s Stand Stakes. In 2018, Horse Of Fortune checked in runner-up in the G1 Kranji MIle behind fellow Hong Kong-trained Southern Legend, before Singapore Sling went on to pick up third prize in the same race the following year.
