30 April Penang Racing Preview by Mark Lydeamore

Penang’s highest rated galloper, AHTIMS KLIS (1) will make her long awaited return to the race track this Sunday in the 1400m Rapid Stakes A contest (Race 4).

The seven-year-old mare, who chalked up five wins during the 2022 season, contested three Group one races prior to spelling back in December, including an eye-catching 2nd in the Perak Coronation Cup. AHTIMS KLIS (1) will be facing some stiff opposition first up including the progressive and locally unbeaten BIG DOCTOR (2), who will be aiming for the winning hat trick. The former Australian galloper has impressed in both Malaysian outings and will be first up since defeating the talented mare, Xena in early March. BIG DOCTOR (2) has scored three times when resuming previously and looks the logical leader who will be hard to run down over the longer trip. WISHUPONASTAR (5) adds an interesting dimension to this event as the Marcus Teh trained gelding travels outstation for the first time for his sixteenth appearance in the country. With a good record of 6 wins from 15 Malaysian starts, WISHUPONASTAR (5) is another fast beginner who will be prominent for a long way. The locally trained CHINA CAPTAIN (3) has won five times over the 1400m journey and he should improve on his return to home territory.

Race 4 Selections: 2 – 1 – 5 – 3

Local trainer Ananthen Kuppan, currently 11th on the premiership striking at 12%, will be represented by several winning chances including his maiden performer GOLD SKY TRILLION (1), who resumes in the 1200m Class 5 event (Race 8). This galloper displayed loads of potential during his first preparation which came to a halt after just three starts. The gelding pulled up lame after sprinting from near last to finish a length 2nd on October 8. GOLD SKY TRILLION (1) looked sharp in his recent trial and is one to follow in coming weeks starting this Sunday. MYSTERIOUS CAPTAIN (4) is on the downgrade and his only appearance at Class 5 level yielded a victory back in December. He could prove to be the main danger while BATTLESTAR (2) chalked up successive wins in February and can bounce back from his last start failure. GOLDEN SHOW (3) has been tried in the markets on several occasions and is yet to miss a place at this track and distance.

Race 8 Selections: 1 – 4 – 2 – 3
