Race Preview

Race 1 – PRIX TOURBILLON –  2100m CL1. Purse EUR €35,000.

  1. DON DIEGO DE VEGA – Scored at this track last time and is unbeaten after two runs. Hard to knock the winning form.
  2. SAADI – Returned from a spell with fair effort last start when fifth at Deauville All Weather over 1900m. Find this too tough.
  3. HAPTICS – Has looked good in his seven career starts most recently scoring by a head over 2100m at Pornichet. Solid top-three hope.
  4. FIRST MINISTER – Proved too good as favourite on debut back on October 6 scoring by a head at this track over 1500m. Winning chance again.
  5. A MINARDIERE – Didn’t fire second up when sixth over 2000m at this track on March 9. Needs to improve sharply to figure.
  6. ELUSIVE PRINCESS – Returns after a break of five months. Finished her last campaign impressively when scoring by 1L over 1800m at Longchamp. Solid top-three prospects.

Summary: FIRST MINISTER (4) debuted with a head victory in a 1500m newcomers contest here last autumn. Taken to maintain his unbeaten record. Unbeaten in two starts DON DIEGO DE VEGA (1) looks a big threat on the back of a 1L triumph over 2000m in a conditions event here. ELUSIVE PRINCESS (6) registered a 1L victory in a conditions race over 1800m at this circuit. Shortlist. HAPTICS (3) is another to consider following a head triumph in a 2100m conditions race on the AW at Pornichet.

Selections

FIRST MINISTER (4) – DON DIEGO DE VEGA (1) – ELUSIVE PRINCESS (6) – HAPTICS (3)

Race 2 – PRIX PENELOPE –  2100m OPEN. Purse EUR €80,000.

  1. PENSEE DU JOUR – Impressive in two starts to date including when victorious by 7L in the Listed Prix Rose de Mai over 2000m here 23 days ago. Leading contender.
  2. SOLAIRE – Held 5.75L sixth in a 2000m contest at Meydan in February. Looks up against on her return to France.
  3. IZNIK – Completed a double when victorious by a nose in a Class 2 conditions race over 2150m at Cagnes-sur-Mer. Of note for a top stable.
  4. SPEIRLING BEAG – Winner of the G3 Eyrefield Stakes over 1811m at Leopardstown last October. Claims debuting for a new stable.
  5. CITE D’OR – Failed to shine in two starts in Dubai this year. Others hold more obvious claims.
  6. BE HAPPY – Followed up a debut win at Cork with a 3.25L fifth in the G3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes over 1609m at The Curragh. Strong claims.
  7. LIBRARY – Dual winner at two and ran a fair race when 7.75L fifth in the G1 Fillies’ Mile over 1609m at Newmarket in October. Bold show expected.
  8. SEA OF ROSES – Broke her maiden by a nose in a 1609m contest at Doncaster in October. Notable contender with more to come on her first start at this distance.

Summary: PENSEE DU JOUR (1) impressed when drawing 7L clear of her rivals in the Listed Prix Rose de Mai over 2000m here. Looks capable of maintaining her unbeaten record. BE HAPPY (6) looks the pick of the Aidan O’Brien pair. Gets a chance to shine on her first start since a 3.25L fifth in the G3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes over 1609m at The Curragh in October. Stablemate LIBRARY (7) registered a 7.75L fifth in the G1 Fillies’ Mile over 1609m at Newmarket a day earlier. Dangerous first up. Race 3 – PRIX DU LANGUEDOC –  2100m HCP CL2. Purse EUR €53,000.

  1. RUE DES IRLANDAIS – Just a plain effort first up when tenth over 2000m at this track. Will take a lot from that run and is in the mix.
  2. GAIDAR – Stepping out at this circuit for the first time. Last appeared when he finished fourth over 1900m at Chantilly All Weather on March 15. Winning chance.
  3. LIGHTED GLORY – Was below par two back at Cagnes-sur-Mer All Weather then bounced back with a win over 2000m at this track last time out. Leading contender.
  4. THUNDERSPEED – Has been in the market on his last couple of starts but hasn’t made an impression most recently finishing eighth over 2150m at Cagnes-sur-Mer. Needs to lift.

  6. TAURAN SHAMAN – Last start finished a close second at Fontainebleau over 2200m. Shapes as a key runner.
  7. VA S’Y MIX – Resumed from a break with a 0.5L win over 1900m at Bordeaux last start. Still has scope for improvement and is well-placed to go close.
  8. LA MANDOLA – Has a poor winning strike rate and failed to improve on it last start when she finished third over 2150m at Cagnes-sur-Mer. Not dismissed.
  9. DOURIANN – Encouraging first-up run when third at Fontainebleau over 2200m on March 3. Fitter and worth following up.
  10. LONDON ROYAL – Last appeared four-and-a-half months ago when he finished 1.2L from the winner in third over 2000m at this track. Could surprise.
  11. QUEEN LADY – Has not raced since finishing 14L away in tenth over 2000m at this track on November 17. Unlikely.
  12. ARTURO – Has been out of the money in recent runs including last time out when fifth over 2400m at Lyon-Parilly two weeks ago. Hard to have.
  13. SAPHIRA DREAM – Won two times earlier on in her prep. Can contest the finish.
  14. SHAWBAK – Disappointed a last start when seventh over 1900m at Chantilly All Weather after a win at Deauville All Weather prior to that. Each way claims on best form.
  15. YOU ROCK – Returned from a spell with fair effort last start when fifth at this track over 2000m. Prefer others.
  16. COGOLIN – No support in betting first-up when tenth over 2500m at this track. Must go to a new level to compete in this line-up.

Summary: TAURAN SHAMAN (6) suffered a head defeat when runner-up in a 2200m conditions race at Fontainebleau. Selected to go one better back in a handicap. LIGHTED GLORY (3) won by 2L when contesting a 2000m handicap here. Danger to all despite a 3.5kg rise in the weights. GAIDAR (2) delivered a 3.25L fourth in a 1900m handicap at Chantilly AW. Shortlist. DOURIANN (9) warrants consideration on handicap debut following a 1.5L third over 2200m in a Fontainebleau maiden. VA S’Y MIX (7) won over 1900m at Bordeaux. Claims in this event.

  5. SCHWENDI – Finished midfield last start at Chantilly All Weather over 1300m. Taking on this longer journey for the first time.
  6. APAX – Returned from a spell last start and finished just a neck from the winner in third at Compiegne over 1600m. Sure to be right there at the business end.
