South Africa Horse Racing Previews: DURBANVILLE@2023.03.07

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 1, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R125.000, 12:45GMT+2

Race Summary: ARTICUNO was supported on debut in a warm 2yo feature, which suggests she’s been putting in good work at home, and would’ve improved for that experience so could be worth following. HIGHLYCONFIDENTIAL and UNCONQUERABLE LADY were also in the betting on debut and ought to have come on since, so could make their presence felt. GLAWARI is probably better than her last start suggests and should have a role to play if reproducing the promise she showed on debut. Watch the betting on the newcomers!

Selections:

#3 Articuno, #9 Highlyconfidential, #6 Triptothewoods, #5 Glawari

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 2, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R125.000, 13:20GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. LILY OF THE NILE finished ahead of STREETSHAVENONAME in a 1100m feature last time out and is slightly better off at the weights so should confirm that form over this extended trip. WARM WINTER NITE and PRINCE OF DENMARK will improve with experience and should have more to offer over this, so could pose a threat. Newcomers POINTDEXTER and LORD FYFIELD are worth a market check and could run forward races on debut, especially if the market speaks in their favour. Watch the betting!

Selections:

#6 Lily Of The Nile, #3 Streetshavenoname, #1 Warm Winter Nite, #8 Prince Of Denmark

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 3, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R80.000, 13:55GMT+2

Race Summary: ANNA KARENINA finished ahead of MARY LAMB over slightly further last time but the latter is better off at the weights and ideally drawn so expected to turn the tables. Similarly, LADY RENEE was ahead of GO LIKE FLO over 1200m last time but the latter is now weighted to reverse that form and should have more to offer over this trip. MISTY CLIFFS has a wide draw to overcome but could bounce back to form with the blinkers removed. Stablemate HUMMINGBIRD is awkwardly drawn but bred to be useful, so probably worth a market check on debut.

Selections:

#5 Go Like Flo, #1 Mary Lamb, #11 Hummingbird, #12 On Board

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 4, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R150.000, 14:30GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. Fillies KWINTA’S LIGHT and ECHO OF LIFE are favourably treated by the conditions and should be competitive dropping in class having contested feature races in recent starts. The latter is distance suited but even under bottom weight may need relief from the handicapper before adding to her tally. Consistent TOUT A FAIT finished behind last-start winner PORT LOUIS over this trip last time out and could represent the value in the race on 3kg better terms for a two-length beating. GEM KING and CAT DADDY have claims too, taking on lesser company in a smaller field.

Selections:

#7 Tout A Fait, #6 Port Louis, #8 Kwinta’s Light, #1 Sun Dazed

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 5, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R125.000, 15:05GMT+2

Race Summary: Good race. SOLAR POWER bounced back to form in his second start after a rest and gelding. He ought to improve further trying this trip for the first time and is fancied to follow up off a career-high mark. Progressive FUTURE SWING is distance suited and gets 2,5kg from the selection, so likely to fight out the finish in his hat-trick bid. CHOLLIMA is better off at the weights with that rival so capable of getting into the picture. Both LION’S HEAD and STEINBECK are consistent should also make their presence felt. GENTLEMAN JOE could surprise at odds.

Selections:

#3 Solar Power, #6 Future Swing, #1 Lion’s Head, #10 Steinbeck

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 6, Gallops, 2400m, Turf, R175.000, 15:40GMT+2

Race Summary: Listed feature for the stayers. SILVER HOST missed the whole of 2022 but remains one of the country’s better long-distance horses, and he confirmed as much by running on to finish just over a length behind the winner in his 2nd start after a long layoff. He sets the standard and is the one to they all have to beat in his peak outing off a 2-point lower mark. Stablemate THEFUTUREISBRIGHT is distance suited and likely to give cheek in receipt of 9kg. MASTER REDOUTE and ARCTIC DRIFT are better off at the weights with the selection and also capable of posing a threat.

Selections:

#4 Silver Host, #6 Thefutureisbright, #8 Arctic Drift, #1 Master Redoute

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 7, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R125.000, 16:15GMT+2

Race Summary: It’s hard to look beyond unbeaten LOVE IN WINTER who, despite carrying joint top-weight of 61.5kg, is probably better than rated and likely to improve further still. He is unbeaten over the course and distance but is worse off at the weights with TRIVIAL MATTER who is likely to pose a threat under the conditions and from an ideal No 1 gate. The latter was beaten by MUFASA last time out but ought to turn the tables on these terms. ELUSIVE TRADER and TCHAIKOVSKY are also better off at the weights with their last-start conqueror, so should have a say in the finish.

Selections:

#4 Love In Winter, #1 Trivial Matter, #5 Elusive Trader, #3 Mufasa

Durbanville, 07.03.2023, Race 8, Gallops, 1250m, Turf, R125.000, 16:50GMT+2

Race Summary: Good race. DISTINCTION beat stablemate HUNTING TRIP over 1000m last time out but the step up to this distance and the weight turnaround favours the latter, who also appears the stable elect with jockey Richard Fourie switching mounts. Last-start winner WHAT A STATE has more to do in this company but can make her presence felt from an inside gate. SHANTASTIC ought to pose a threat on these terms, while consistent MISS GREENLIGHT can never be discounted. MULBERRY STREET and FLYING FIRST could also get into the picture.

Selections:

#4 Hunting Trip, #1 Distinction, #3 Shantastic, #5 Miss Greenlight

Best Win: #4 SILVER HOST

Best Value Bet: #7 TOUT A FAIT

Best Longshot: #7 TOUT A FAIT
