South Africa Racing – Magicallee can wave her wand

Punters may have to take a leap of faith in the Track & Ball.co.za Handicap, sixth race on the card at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, where Will O Me takes on some speedy sorts on the poly.

Garth Puller’s stable is red hot at present. With no super stars in his yard, Puller has planned his stable runners to peak at around the time that the visiting trainers, here with their strings for Champions Season, are headed back to home base leaving his runners taking on the lessor lights.

But is Will O Me a lessor light. She has only had three starts, shedding her maiden at the expense of possible Equus Two-year-old Filly of the year Canadian Summer. A word of caution however, is that this was over a 1200m dash while Canadian Summer has made her reputation over seven furlongs and a mile. That said, Canadian Summer is a class galloper so Will O Me’s effort is not to be sneezed at.

However, she is a recently turned three-year-old taking on seasoned opposition and she could be up against it in the form of the Kom Naidoo-trained Magicallee. With 37 starts under her girth as opposed to Will O Me’s three and 10kg difference in the weights, it could be a tall ask for Will O Me up against a seasoned mare in cracking form over her best course and distance.

Magicallee has reeled of three seconds on the bounce over course and distance since her last win and that form has held up well.

Highveld-based Sean Tarry has left a string behind to take advantage of the poly track including Miss Magician who has put in two smart efforts since switching to the synthetic surface. She looks held by Magicallee but there should be very little in it and should not be far behind. Peter Muscutt saddles Ethiopian Queen who has been a touch disappointing after showing plenty of promise early in her two-year-old career earning a lofty handicap rating. But she has come down in the ratings and now appears to be off a more competitive mark and she can go close at best.
