RACE 12 [TF0609]

The Inquiry into the handling of SALAMENCE in Race 12 at the Singapore Turf Club Meeting on Saturday, 21 May 2022 was concluded on Wednesday, 25 May 2022.  After taking evidence from Jockey S John (pictured) and Trainer KY Young, the Trainer of SALAMENCE, Jockey John was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that he, as the rider of SALAMENCE, in Race 12, failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars being:

  • that near the 450m, he did fail to attempt to shift to the outside of METAL WORLD (CC Wong), which would have afforded him an unimpeded run to the Line when it was reasonable and permissible for him to do so; and
  • that near the 250m, he did direct his mount away from a clear run between HARRY DREAM (L Beuzelin) and SUPER IMPACT (J Bayliss) when it was reasonable and permissible to expect him to attempt to improve between these runners.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the serious nature of the charge, his record, his personal circumstances and precedent penalties.

Jockey John was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from Wednesday, 25 May 2022 to Wednesday, 24 May 2023 both dates inclusive in accordance with the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a).  In addition, he was fined a sum of S$20,000.  He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

On Thursday, 26 May 2022, Jockey John exercised his Right of Appeal against the decision of the Stewards and the penalty imposed on him.  The Appeal will be heard at a date to be fixed.
