There are four juicy feature races at Scottsville on Sunday including two Grade 3 events. These are pipe openers for horses going on to bigger and better events and as such, most will come on from their races some can be had at decent prices.
But players should start the day off with a bang as Grinkov looks hard to beat in Race 1.
Grinkov was expected to win his next start after a promising debut but was thrown in the deep end when running in two Western Cape features where he found rising stars Cliff Top and We’re Jamming too good.
The form of these races have been of high quality with multiple winners coming out of them including Sales race winner Certainly who finished 1.50 length adrift of Grinkov.
Grinkov runs in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m where fellow Cape colt Winning Single looks a lively contender.
Shrewd players will couple Grinkov with Amarandi (Race 2) and Full Velocity (Race 8) in multiples. Amarandi has not run to her best at Greyville but has a big chance of making a winning return to Scottsville on Sunday.
She has the best of the draws in this Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m and should take advantage of mostly inexperienced individuals.
Highveld trainer Sean Tarry has been ‘cleaning up’ in feature races as per usual and Full Velocity looks well placed in her heat. She runs in the Listed feature, the KwaZulu-Natal Stakes over 1200m, and a quick glance at her form will tell you she has been running with the best of late while the majority have not.
She needed her last race when well beat behind Paul Peter’s crack filly Big Burn and she is expected to show the strength of her form in no uncertain terms.
So Full Velocity looks the right one in the one feature and Shampompo Shampizi remains the pick in the Listed King’s Cup (Race 5) which was moved from last week due to inclement weather, but the other two races – the Umzimkhulu Stakes (Race 6) and the Byerley Turf (Race 7) – are wide open.
