Calantha stands out in Sycamore Sprint

Saturday’s nine-race programme on the Standside track at Turffontein Racecourse may lack Grade 1 headlines, but it presents strong betting opportunities, particularly in the late sprint features.

The Grade 3 Sycamore Sprint (Race 7) over 1160m for fillies and mares centres around the progressive Calantha, who appears to have returned from a lengthy break in peak form. The daughter of Querari has won two of five starts since her six-month layoff, highlighted by an authoritative victory over 1200m at the Vaal in February where she quickened impressively under 60kg.

Although raised three merit-rating points, the Mike de Kock-trained mare remains lightly raced for a five-year-old and could still be ahead of the handicapper. A three-time winner over this course and distance, she returns to favourable conditions with Jeffrey Syster retaining the ride and looks the runner to beat.

The closing Pinnacle Stakes (Race 9), also over 1160m, features veteran sprinter William Robertson, who continues to defy age. The son of Rafeef recorded his 17th career victory over 1000m at Turffontein two weeks ago, carrying 62kg and finishing strongly under Ryan Munger.

Their partnership has been highly productive, yielding seven wins from 15 starts together. The extra distance poses no concern, with William Robertson boasting an outstanding record over the course and distance, rarely finishing outside the placings. Racing off the same mark, he again sets the standard.

Earlier on the card, juveniles Kavady (Race 2) and Turn It Up (Race 3) both impressed when winning at their second starts and look capable of further improvement, offering punters early opportunities before the established sprint stars take centre stage.
