SEAN TARRY SPARKLES ON DAY 2 OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Johannesburg, South Africa — Despite soaking rain during the week, Classic Day dawned bright and sunny over Turffontein with a penetrometer reading of 25 and the track condition Good To Soft.

Sean Tarry reminded everyone why he is a force to be reckoned with, taking four features on the day, namely the WILGERBOSDRIFT RUFFIAN STAKES (Listed), WILGERBOSDRIFT ACACIA STAKES (Listed), HKJC WORLD POOL SA CLASSIC (Grade 1) and WILGERBOSDRIFT H F OPPENHEIMER HORSE CHESTNUT STAKES (Grade 1).

The day’s card kicked off promptly at 11:30 with the opener, the 1160m 4RACING WELCOMES YOU MAIDEN PLATE (F and M), going the way of Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein’s 3yo filly Detailed Forecast (Gimmethegreenlight – World Radar), trained by Mike & Mathew de Kock and ridden by Callan Murray.
The first feature of the day, the TAB STORM BIRD STAKES (Listed), went the way of ASSM Racing Syndicate (Nom: Mr A Chadha), Messrs M F de Kock, T Gujadhur, G Ragunan, Mrs N P Malherbe & Wernars Family’s World Attraction (One World – Major Attraction). Bred by Messrs E A Braun, Neville Cooper & W D Mealing, trained by the Mike & Mathew de Kock team and steered to a 1.7 length victory by Callan Murray, she covered the 1000m in a time of 58.39.

Then it was the turn of the Triple Tiara contenders in the WILGERBOSDRIFT SA FILLIES CLASSIC (Grade 1). All eyes were on Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Hazy Dazy (Act Of War – Rabbedoe)and the grandstand erupted as she dug deep to keep her head in front in the closing stages. She covered the 1800m in a time of 114.17, securing victory by 1 length to stamp her credentials as a serious Triple Tiara contender and deliver a first Gr1 win for apprentice Trent Mayhew. HKJC WORLD POOL SA CLASSIC (Grade 1)

The HKJC World Pool SA Classic saw the result go right down the wire with the narrowest of margins separating the first two, but the result went the way of Mrs H Kuhn’s Grand Empire (Vercingetorix – Palace Of Dreams). Trained by Sean Tarry and benefitting from a shrewdly timed ride by Craig Zackey, he stopped the clock in 112.61. Tarry sportingly acknowledged Cape colleague Eric Sands in the post-race interview, saying Sands had originally selected the horse and trained him early on, but didn’t get to race him and said that’s the really tough side of racing, but thanked the Kuhns for their confidence and support. Bred by Al Adiyaat (Sheik Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum), Grand Empire now has 4 wins and 2 places from 6 career starts.
