Sean Veale returns to action aboard Maphaka in next Wednesday’s Class 4 (1200m) on the Greyville poly, and Dean Kannemeyer’s gelding looks the obvious choice after a close second to Fortress Of Fire. Stablemate Umzingeli Wenyathi rates a serious threat after winning his maiden and backing it up in handicap company, while Clever Trevor brings useful Highveld form to his poly debut. Rainbow Reward, a proven poly specialist with a claimer aboard, could upset.
Hollywood Racing also has a strong hand in the Middle Stakes (1400m) where recent maiden winner Tladi Mothwana faces tougher, but could still contend if fairly assessed. Back At The George is one to watch in the market, Sovereign Grant is consistent and close again, and One Smart Cookie is best judged back at this trip.
Race two is competitive, but progressive three-year-old Kanaal Skater looks capable of another big run despite the class rise. Imposing, winner of the Christmas Handicap, is a major danger, with Bourbon Warrior and Icy Blast also in the mix.
In the opener, Skipper O’Malley has improved on the poly and should go well despite top weight. Spanish Feud, Praise De La Rey and Cape raider Chasing Gold all have claims.
The fourth is wide open. Brave Voyager drops in class and appeals from a good draw, while Blazing Light and No I Got You are competitive on their preferred surface.
Sean Tarry’s raider Mystical Miss looks a key chance in the fifth on poly debut with Mickaelle Michel aboard. Versace Onthetrack has joined a new yard with blinkers on, and Mystic Dancer bids for a poly hat-trick after a lenient rise.
The finale is another tricky handicap. Dawn Surprise is holding form and well drawn, Quentasia is nicely weighted, while Greenlight Queen and Predatrice also feature in a wide-open finish.
