Honest Tenpenny to prove his stamina

Tenpenny “十元”

Tenpenny has risen steadily through the ranks, developing from an average type into a reliable campaigner, and trainer Patrick Kruyer is now considering a Champions Season raid in KwaZulu-Natal. He steps up to 1800m for the first time in race 7 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday and, if he stays, looks well placed to win.

His improvement is backed up by solid formlines. Major Master, who beat Tenpenny last time out, went on to produce a big effort when second to Regulation in the Grade 3 Ownpay Peninsula Handicap over this trip, which reflects well on Tenpenny’s chances. A productive spring campaign at Durbanville, where he recorded a win and a placing, also appeared to boost his confidence. A KZN-bred, he could yet line up in the KZN Breeders’ Race ahead of the Durban July. Regular rider Juan-Paul van der Merwe, aboard for all but one of his 11 starts, takes the ride again.

Landoftherisingsun remains an intriguing rival. He impressed when winning the Listed Woolavington over 2000m but returned flat last time. With 60kg to shoulder he faces a test, though there is a sense he has more to offer, especially over further. Andrew Fortune rides. Pinot Grigio is another with claims after a solid effort behind Regulation over this course and distance, with Grant van Niekerk booked.

Elsewhere on the card, Vercicat is the early pick in the opener over 1000m, aided by a good draw and a useful claim. Trailfinder looks ready to go one better in race 2 after a strong debut second to subsequent winner Digby. Seven No Trump appears overdue for a maiden success in race 3, with the drop back to 1200m expected to suit.

Gallic King heads a competitive race 4 over 1400m, while Homing Pigeon gets another chance in race 5 after a string of improving efforts. Yamazaki should relish the step up to 1800m in race 6, Worldly looks suited by extra ground in race 8, and Golden Destiny could cap the day in race 10 after an encouraging recent run.
