Turffontein hosts a bumper 10-race Public Holiday meeting on Tuesday, headlined by the Grade 2 Mike de Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge — a 1600m test for fillies and mares honouring the legendary Ipi Tombe. Mike de Kock has won the last two editions and bids for a third with Spumante Dolce, the best-weighted runner and daughter of 2013 winner Espumanti.
But Sean Tarry looks set to spoil the party. Callmegetrix has flourished since joining his yard, producing a second, a win, and another strong second. Her convincing Grade 2 Spring Challenge victory and smart Charity Mile runner-up effort mark her as the one to beat, especially back against her own sex and partnered by Richard Fourie. A repeat of her last run should be enough.
Rodeo Drive, close behind Callmegetrix in both key form races, is consistent and rates the main threat for a Tarry exacta. Kisshoten also deserves respect after beating future Summer Cup winner Mocha Blend last time out; despite a penalty, she remains a lively trifecta and quartet contender.
The supporting feature, the Sun Chariot Stakes (2400m), should revolve around Teo Torriatte, ultra-reliable at the trip and reunited with apprentice Mxolisi Mbutho, who has an excellent record on her. Despite top weight, she may get an uncontested lead in the small field and prove tough to reel in.
Elsewhere, De Kock is still primed for a double through two progressive three-year-olds. One Eye On Vegas, a close runner-up over 1160m after a strong fourth in the Grade 3 Graham Beck, looks ready to score in Race 4. Splittheeights, an impressive maiden winner on Summer Cup day, is well placed to follow up in Race 9 on handicap debut.
