The Shepherd to lead them home

The Shepherd

The Shepherd has long hinted at untapped potential, and he looks ready to deliver in the Middle Stakes over 1600m on the poly at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Tuesday. Trained by Peter Muscutt, the gelding has four wins and six placings from 15 starts. After finishing second to now-Gr1 winner Gladatorian last September, he returned from nearly a year’s break with three encouraging runs, each showing progress. With solid form behind him, he could be the one to beat.

Frank Robinson’s classy mare Mocha Blend also returns, using this as a prep for the Highveld spring season after smart efforts in the Gr2 Woolavington 2000 and Gold Bracelet. She handles any surface and poses a strong threat.

Among the rest, Sign Of Fate is well-drawn and weighted to feature, while Ingqele and Officer In Command represent the De Kock yard — the former slightly better off and drawn — with Calvin Habib aboard.

The De Kocks could also strike early: Bombardier Boy should improve from his narrow debut second, while Ovation Star debuts in a weak maiden where any market support will be telling. Kali Bwana and Dee Day are worth including.

Xiphos stands out as a solid bet, thriving on the poly with blinkers on and set for more over extra ground. Captain Frank and Susurrando could chase him home.

Later, Rejuvenate, Red Lhasa, and Fine Wine look strong in the fillies’ handicap, while Princess Goldie and Mountains Of The Moon appeal in Race 6.

Closing races look open: School Policy, Ilha Da Orange, and Purple Flower all hold claims in Race 7, while World Pharoah, Bless Me Fred, and Catavar bring consistent form into the finale. Expect competitive racing all round.
