August 10 Perak Preview By Mark Lydeamore

There will be plenty of betting opportunities for punters with a marathon twelve race card to be contested at the Perak Turf Club on Sunday commencing at 12.30pm.

Four-year-old MAVERICK has won twice in his career so far, both over the mile which includes his comprehensive all the way victory here three weeks ago. He will be searching for back-to-back wins in the 1600m Class 5A contest (Race 1). The gelding set a genuine tempo from the start and never gave his rivals a look in at any stage with a dominant 4.75L win and it could be a case of déjà vu if jockey Rueven Ravindra adopts the same tactics. ONEMOREFORTHEROAD is also due to strike following a fast-finishing 2nd to the inform MASTER JIANGMEN last start over Sunday’s journey. Unfortunately, the seven-year-old has been slow from the barriers recently and has the tendency to give away big starts. With a cleaner getaway, he is capable of breaking the twelve-month winning drought.

Speaking of MASTER JIANGMEN, he may be ten years of age but has been rejuvenated since joining the T Asogan stable as he aims for his fourth successive win in the 1600m Class 4A contest (Race 4). The gelding has been racing on speed lately and his victories have been recorded by decent margins. On a similar path, THE SHADOW is also targeting four in a row but his wins have been over 1400m. The nine-year-old has never won beyond 1400m which does create some doubt whether he can handle not only the class rise but the distance rise also. On the weights, FORTUNE STAR might be the one to beat as he is a two-time winner from three tries at the track and distance and is coming off a good run against Cosmo C company here on July 19. He looks the value selection with 53kg to carry.

Six-year-old performer, MAN OF ACTION is a chance to bounce back into winning form in the 1400m Cosmo C event (Race 8). With a local record of three wins from six starts, he looks ideally placed coming off an eye-catching effort in the 1100m G1 Perak Gold Vase on July 13 where he powered home from last to finish 4th, beaten 4L. The gelding possesses a quick turn of speed and looks hard to beat with the 59kg. There are some progressive types engaged in the race including WILSING, which broke its maiden tag in an 1100m Class 4 race on July 13 and also SWEET LOVE, a forward runner aiming for the hat trick. WECANDO has moved base to Ipoh since his last performance and with two wins from two starts on the Ipoh circuit, he could be the surprise packet again.

The 1200m Enrich Stakes A contest (Race 9) sees the return of track specialist VINCENT’S STAR which resumes from a three-month break. First up since finishing unplaced in the 1200m PRTC Community Shield, he faces some stiff opposition and will be relying on his class to pull him through but generally the gelding does race well when resuming. Recording four wins in a row earlier this year VINCENT’S STAR looks the likely favourite. Stable mate ROCKET BOY is building a handy record locally with three wins from five starts and is capable of winning with race fitness on his side. The former Australian galloper was placed 4th behind VINCENT’S STAR at a previous meeting back in March but the result could be reversed come Sunday. BIG BAD MAMA looks the logical leader and is coming off an unplaced effort in the G1 Perak Gold Vase. The dangerous front runner carries 53kg, 4kg less than her nearest rival in the weights and could be hard to catch if the mare is allowed to dictate from the top end.
