Sunday’s new-season opener in KwaZulu-Natal will take place on the turf at Hollywoodbets Greyville, following the venue switch from Scottsville due to highway demolition works. The feature of the day is the Listed Off To Stud Stakes over 1600m, and it promises to deliver fireworks with a competitive line-up.
All eyes will be on Callmegetrix, representing the in-form Candice Bass-Robinson yard, which had a stellar week with winners at both Greyville and Kenilworth. While Callmegetrix was outclassed in the Grade 1 Garden Province last time, her previous form suggests she’s well suited to this grade. She’ll need to be at her best, though, as White Pearl—who finished less than a length behind her in the Garden Province—now has the advantage of a better draw. Gareth van Zyl’s filly Two G’s, though stepping up in class and distance, brings solid recent form, while the reliable Sovereign Grant is seldom far off and could be in the mix again.
One of the stronger bets on the card may come in Race 6, where Glen Kotzen’s maiden Cassandra appears ready to break through, having shown consistency in all three starts. She faces exposed rivals, but Amafort and Copacabana are improving types who could challenge. Mountainsofthemoon is another to consider, especially after benefiting from a tongue-tie and securing a favourable draw.
In the juvenile races, Blazing Beauty is worth a look after a major improvement for her new stable. Meanwhile, Captain Ventura is a first-timer from the Darryl Moore yard who’s reportedly very quick. Kanaal Skater and That’ll B The Day stand out in the second race, both showing solid credentials.
Sunday’s meeting launches the season with promise—strong form runners, emerging talent, and fierce rivalries will make it a day worth watching.
