South Africa Racing – Amazing colours deserves a win

Sharon Kotzen

It is back to the Polytrack at Fairview on Friday and it is a tough card for punters to deal with but we have come up with three runners who should go close to winning.

Amazing Colours in Race 2 is the first of them. The Heavenly Blue filly has been knocking hard on the door and it could be her turn to win.

A well-beaten third on debut on turf over 1000m suggested she needed a bit further and she has responded to that by improving and finishing runner-up in her next four starts.

She has been getting further away from the winner each time, but trainer Sharon Kotzen could have sorted out that problem by adding blinkers this time.

Jockey Louie Mxothwa has ridden her in all her races so far and hopefully the blinkers will sharpen her up and she can use her good finishing kick to score.

Eastern Cape champion trainer Gavin Smith must have expected more wins from Demigod as she scored in only her second start under his care. But she is not an easy ride and has not won in five starts since winning in December over 1600m.

The Var mare looked to have got her act together and was all dressed up and ready to score with 200m to go last time out but started hanging and it cost her dearly as she was only 0.35 lengths adrift of Meredith Grey at the line.

Jockey Craig Zackey gets his first ride on the five-year-old and if he can time his run right, she can win.

In the past it was considered a punter’s crime to go against the best-weighted runners in Plate races but the past season has shown you can do that and find a winner.

Central City is the second-best weighted runner in Race 5, a Novice Plate over 1600m, and well behind Zatara Magic on ratings.

He has been a rare recruit to the Alan Greeff yard in that has yet to win but that can change on Friday.

Central City is best around the 1600m distance and was runner-up over the course and distance in April and has run well twice under current rider Richard Fourie.

Obviously, his main danger is Smith-trained Zatara Magic who has disappointed in two attempts over staying distances after running a cracker in the East Cape Derby when sixth to Machete Man.

There have been a couple of winners out of that race already.
