Durbanville Preview – 20 March

South Africa Horse Racing Previews: DURBANVILLE@2023.03.20

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 1, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R125.000, 12:55GMT+2

Race Summary: KYOMAI improved for the step up to 1200m in a 2yo feature last time and will have more to offer going the extra 200m, so is likely to be involved in the finish. WOMAN’S WORLD and ROYALS have a score to settle. Both fillies ought to fare better pitched back into a maiden after contesting features at their last 2 starts and should make their presence felt in receipt of a 3kg sex allowance. HARD WINTER warrants respect after a pleasing debut and could have a say with natural improvement expected. Well-bred GREENLAND is related to Equus Champion Celtic Sea so is worth a market check on debut.

Selections:

#4 Kyomai, #2 Royals, #1 Woman’s World, #10 Greenland

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 2, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R125.000, 13:30GMT+2

Race Summary: A case can be made for each of these. BYE BYE BOMBSHELL was 4th in consecutive feature races over further before a 9-week break. She is distance suited and ought to fare better dropping in class off a 2-point lower mark. On the form of their meeting in the Victress Stakes, stablemate VERONICA MARS warrants respect on 2.5kg better terms. FLEETING may have needed her last start and could do better returning to the scene of her 2 career wins. BETTY BOOP finished ahead of that rival when trying 1600m last time and should confirm. BROADWAY GIRL could also have a say racing off a career-high mark.

Selections:

#1 Bye Bye Bombshell, #2 Veronica Mars, #5 Betty Boop, #6 Broadway Girl

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 3, Gallops, 1250m, Turf, R80.000, 14:05GMT+2

Race Summary: ON BOARD hit the front too soon before petering out to finish 5th against the boys in her last start, and the form is working out well. She is ideally drawn back against her own sex and gets 1.5kg from likely market leader APPLE CATCHER, so ought to be competitive. The latter has been 2nd in both starts and needn’t improve a great deal to go one better on her track debut. Year-older rival SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL has proved costly to follow but maintains her consistency. She has finished 2nd over the course and distance, an experience which should stand her in good stead.

Selections:

#6 Apple Catcher, #1 On Board, #5 Simply Beautiful, #9 Love Rules

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 4, Gallops, 1250m, Turf, R80.000, 14:40GMT+2

Race Summary: MISTY CLIFFS was drawn wide and ran into traffic problems when returning from a break over 1400m last time out. She finished 1.75 lengths behind GO LIKE FLO on that occasion but is favourably drawn this time around and 1kg better off, so should be competitive. The latter has fewer miles on the clock, though, and the fitting of blinkers for the first time should bring improvement – shortlist. AMETHYSTIC and SILVER SLEET, if showing the pace she did on debut, could also take home a cheque. That said, it could pay to be with well-bred newcomer BO KAAP, closely related to Grade 1 winners.

Selections:

#8 Bo Kaap, #7 Go Like Flo, #2 Misty Cliffs, #4 Goddex Aphaea

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 5, Gallops, 1800m, Turf, R100.000, 15:15GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. HAWK CIRCLE has improved after gelding and the fitting of blinkers has benefitted him too. He has run well in 2 sprints this year and could now be looking for this trip which, on pedigree, should suit. LEGAL CHITCHAT has raised his game recently when racing beyond 1600m. He should make further progress, having been gelded since his last start (against winners), so could fight it out. RUN RUDOLPH RUN and SHOTGUN WILLIE will need a few things to go their way from wide draws but are both capable of making their presence felt. BEAU KALA and FINAL EDITION have claims after improved last starts.

Selections:

#7 Hawk Circle, #9 Legal Chitchat, #10 Run Rudolph Run, #1 Donder Storm

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 6, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R110.000, 15:50GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. FUTURE TURN had BARDOLINO behind him over 1400m two starts back but the latter then turned the tables over this trip last time out and is weighted to confirm that form, albeit from a tricky No 9 gate. GIMME MORE TIME had SILENT TRIGGER 1.50 lengths behind in a recent 1400m meeting but is now 1kg worse off and drawn widest. CARRIACOU finished sandwiched between those rivals on his handicap debut last time and could have more to give over this trip in his peak outing. TOTHEMOONANDBACK will be nearer the action this time around and could feature. INSIDE STORY is improving and has claims too.

Selections:

#9 Bardolino, #2 Future Turn, #3 Carriacou, #10 Gimme More Time

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 7, Gallops, 1250m, Turf, R125.000, 16:25GMT+2

Race Summary: Competitive for a field this size. BARZALONA and DOUBLE CHARGE bounced back to form with close-up finishes in a stronger race last time and will make their presence felt if running to that sort of form again with an extra 1.5kg on their backs. DANCE VARIETY maintained a good level of form and consistency off higher marks prior to his creditable 7th in the 1400m Newlands Stakes last time out. He is closely matched with BEERENBERG on the form of that recent meeting but should be better suited to this shorter trip. The latter, unbeaten over course and distance, will be right in the firing line.

Selections:

#7 Beerenberg, #3 Dance Variety, #1 Barzalona, #4 Silver Falcon

Durbanville, 20.03.2023, Race 8, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R125.000, 16:55GMT+2

Race Summary: Another chance is given to HUNTING TRIP. She failed to go through with her effort when given every chance over 1250m last time but, with the tongue-tie done away with and a return to this trip likely to suit, she could make amends. KENNEDY confirmed the promise of her debut 3rd by winning last time out. She had ENEMY TERRITORY just over a length behind her on that occasion and the latter has since franked that form, running out an easy four-length winner of her next start over this trip – both should improve with experience so ought to be competitive. SHE’S MY CAPTAIN will keep them all honest.

Selections:

#8 Hunting Trip, #5 Kennedy, #1 Enemy Territory, #4 She’s My Captain

Best Win: #6 APPLE CATCHER

Best Value Bet: #9 BARDOLINO

Best Longshot: #9 BARDOLINO
