South Africa Horse Racing Previews: KENILWORTH@2022.07.04

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 1, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R80.000, 12:40GMT+2

Race Summary: Competitive opener. ALPINE CHALLENGE bumped a progressive and older hat-trick scorer when 3rd over this trip last time and should feature prominently if reproducing that form reverting to 2yo company. LE MANS has improved with every start. He wasn’t winning out of turn last time and should make his presence felt if making further improvement trying this shorter trip. DISTINCTION arrives in good form and gets weight from those rivals so is likely to pose a threat. PALO QUEEN is promising and has shown enough to warrant respect, so too PORQUE TE VAS who will appreciate a return to this trip.

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 2, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R70.000, 13:15GMT+2

Race Summary: RAFEEF’S CHOICE found support on debut and ran with promise in finishing 4th over 1200m, despite showing signs of her inexperience. She would’ve come on since and with the benefit of that experience, makes most appeal. DRACMA and SILVER SCREEN are capable of making their presence felt on the back of improved recent efforts. A bigger threat, however, could come from well-bred newcomers GIMME’S LASSIE and SOPHIA RAIE. Watch the betting – follow the market for clues.

Selections:

#5 Rafeef’s Choice, #3 Gimme’s Lassie, #7 Sophia Raie, #6 Silver Screen

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 3, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R60.000, 13:50GMT+2

Race Summary: Youngster FUR BABY made the expected improvement in her second start, a sales race behind a promising sort. On pedigree, she should improve further going this trip. TIME FLIES made an encouraging debut over a shorter trip and should improve for both that experience and the extra 400m. Stablemate TEARDROP improved after a break in her second start over this distance and will be competitive having tightened up since. TOUCH OF GRACE and ST KITTS could also show more trying this trip. Watch the betting on newcomers FUTURE LEGEND and ROYAL INVITATION.

Selections:

#5 Fur Baby, #8 Teardrop, #1 Time Flies, #6 Future Legend

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 4, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R70.000, 14:25GMT+2

Race Summary: RULE OF THUMB built on the promise of his debut 3rd when 2nd next time out. He can go one better again if making further improvement over this trip. ROYAL PORT LOUIS ran on late to finish on the heels of re-opposing MASTERFUL GUY when a close-up 3rd over this trip last time. He should improve to reverse that form and pose a threat to the selection. LAST STORM was 2nd in the Eastern Cape last time out and should make his presence felt too with further improvement expected. MATSUYAMO ran well against winners in his last start and should fare better back in maiden company. STATE OF SHOCK has claims.

Selections:

#9 Rule Of Thumb, #8 Royal Port Louis, #5 Last Storm, #7 Matsuyamo

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 5, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R60.000, 15:00GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. MILLAHUE won at this level when fitted with cheekpieces last time and should go well again, despite a 3-point rise, with that headgear retained. NIGHT RULER is 1kg better off with that rival for 1.65-length so should pose more of a threat, while QUE SHIRAZ is weighted to turn the tables on 1.5kg better terms. AENEAS was a runaway winner of his maiden over 1900m but has shown enough over this trip (with blinkers on) to make his presence felt. CAPTIVE MOON was slightly disappointing over a shorter trip last time but will enjoy the extra 200m – better showing expected.

Selections:

#5 Que Shiraz, #1 Millahue, #7 Captive Moon, #2 Night Ruler

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 6, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R90.000, 15:35GMT+2

Race Summary: Progressive DEAN STREET was impressive in backing up his maiden victory with a win on handicap debut, albeit at a lower level, over a shorter trip. He will be more at home over this trip and should continue to improve, so could complete the hat-trick. ALL ABOUT AL is consistent at this level and will pose a threat in his peak outing off the same mark. HIS CHOICE would’ve tightened up following a pleasing comeback run in stronger company and should make his presence felt too. BARNEY MCGREW is closely matched with that rival and likely to give another honest account, so not to be discounted either.

Selections:

#5 Dean Street, #3 All About Al, #1 His Choice, #2 Barney Mcgrew

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 7, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R60.000, 16:10GMT+2

Race Summary: NIPPY WINTER knows not how to run a bad race and should acquit herself competitvely once more. It could, however, pay to take her on with APOLLO MOON who caught the eye when running on to finish 2nd behind that rival and is now 1kg better off. FEARLESS TRIP and LITTLE MISS PINK should go well again and play a role in the outcome. Last-start maiden winner DEMELZA could have a say with improved fitness on her side. LITTLE DOE and ARCTIC ICE are capable of better than recent showings suggest and could take home a cheque.

Selections:

#5 Apollo Moon, #1 Nippy Winter, #2 Fearless Trip, #3 Little Miss Pink

Kenilworth, 04.07.2022, Race 8, Gallops, 1100m, Turf, R55.000, 16:45GMT+2

Race Summary: Wide open. ON THE ROAD AGAIN was slightly disappointing when well supported last time out but could make amends. BLUFF ON BLUFF and RAGNAR LOTHBROK are closely matched with that rival and shouldn’t be far off again. WORDSWORTH is holding form and should be competitive once more in his peak outing. BALTIMORE JACK and BLUFF ON BLUFF are inconsistent but capable on their day and should not be discounted either. Both SWIFT ACTION and WHAT A STATE are lightly raced and could improve to make their presence felt too. LEGITIMISE and MR FROSTIE could get a look-in if building on improved last starts. Tricky!

Selections:

#5 On The Road Again, #10 Wordsworth, #4 Baltimore Jack, #6 Ragnar Lothbrok

Best Win: #5 FUR BABY

Best Value Bet: #5 APOLLO MOON

Best Longshot: #5 APOLLO MOON
