Kenilworth Preview – 17 February

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 1, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R55.000, 12:55GMT+2

Race Summary: Several with chances in a competitive work riders’ event to begin proceedings. ERTURUL has shown pace with blinkers over further and could have more to offer stepping back in trip. GALLIC GIRL finished in the money in her last 2 starts over this trip and could make her presence felt reverting to this distance after a break. PRINCESS SANTO was third over track and trip last time out behind a winning debutante and should be involved again with improvement likely. GOLDEN TRIP finished two lengths adrift of that rival on her introduction and should come on for the experience, so could turn the tables. CHELSEA RIVER improved with a run under her belt and could have a say in the finish with further progress expected. VOICE NOTES has hit the woodwork in both starts, despite excuses last time, and wouldn’t be scoring out of turn. Respect any market support for well-bred newcomer L’AMI JEAN who is bred to be useful.

#10 Voice Notes, #7 Golden Trip, #3 Princess Santo, #5 Chelsea River

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 2, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R80.000, 13:30GMT+2

Race Summary: Only two have racing experience and of the pair, SAFE RETURN is a standout after an eye-catching debut second over track and trip behind a well-fancied and experienced winner. He ought to have come on with the run and that experience will stand him in good stead – will take some beating. There are, however, a number of very well-bred newcomers who could give cheek. Watch the betting for clues. On pedigree, AUGUSTA GREEN and TSAR PETER are of interest but riding arrangements suggest stable companions WHAT A BOLT and YOU KNOW WHO are preferred. CAPTAIN PERSIA and SIR TALLIN are others to keep an eye on.

#5 Safe Return, #9 You Know Who, #8 What A Bolt, #1 Augusta Green

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 3, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R70.000, 14:05GMT+2

Race Summary: As is the case in the preceding event, there’s little form to go by in this line-up, dominated by newcomers. Pick 6 players could look to banker EUROPEANA, who makes most appeal of the trio to have raced. She should fare best of those with experience if building on the promise of her fast-finishing third on debut over track and trip. Stablemate ZAMBAQ and well-bred FLY BETTER could challenge for honours if not too green. The same applies to well-related LIVE MY LIFE (Drier) and MOUNIA (Tarry) who both represent raiding trainers – watch the betting. KAILENE showed pace on debut and could improve to earn a cheque.

#3 Europeana, #7 Live My Life, #4 Fly Better, #12 Zambaq

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 4, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R55.000, 14:40GMT+2

Race Summary: Good maiden. FORGETFUL GIRL has been threatening to shed her maiden tag recently, notably in her last three starts all over course and distance. She’s likely to make another bold bid. ADDERBURY LAKE has shown promise in both starts up the straight and, on the evidence of those sprints with natural improvement expected, should have more to offer stepping up in trip. PRETTY BETTY was friendless in the market on debut but outran odds of 40/1 with a fast-finishing third over 1000m. She ought to have improved for that experience so could fight it out if overcoming the widest draw. OUR WORLD is distance suited and should give a better account reverting to this trip. MERCI BEAUCOUP, GATE SIXTY NINE and GOLDEN DAH appear best of the rest.

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 5, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R55.000, 15:20GMT+2

Race Summary: SUPERIOR LEADER was backed, led and only outrun late in a competitive 1600m maiden on Met Day. He’s likely to be ridden forward from a wide draw and is expected to feature prominently over a trip which should suit. DOLLAR BRAND has had more chances than these rivals and is racing in good form, so could pose a threat. CHURCHHAVEN (tongue-tie) and recently gelded stablemate DIVERGENT are better than disappointing recent efforts suggest and could bounce back to form. LEGITIMISE just missed over track and trip last start – warrants respect with blinkers retained. BLINGKING, HIKARU and MR FROSTIE aren’t without a chance either.

#3 Superior Leader, #8 Churchhaven, #11 Dollar Brand, #2 Legitimise

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 6, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R65.000, 16:00GMT+2

Race Summary: KITTY CAT CHAT has made an impressive start to her career, winning both starts in the manner of a smart sort. She made light of the handicapper’s assessment of her debut win by effortlessly following up in a similar contest on her handicap debut and, with any amount of improvement to come, a resultant 8-point penalty may not be enough to prevent her from preserving her unbeaten record. CARIBBEAN SUNSET was rewarded for consistency when making a winning start for her new yard last time out and could build on that to pose the biggest threat. AYE AYE and ON CAPTAIN’S SIDE have a bit to find on that form but could get into the picture. Dual course-and-distance winner GAYLEACTIC STAR is capable of making her presence felt too.

#1 Kitty Cat Chat, #3 Caribbean Sunset, #6 Aye Aye, #2 On Captain’s Side

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 7, Gallops, 1800m, Turf, R65.000, 16:35GMT+2

Race Summary: Good race. FYNBOS was dropped out from a wide draw before running on well to finish second to a progressive 3yo over track and trip last time and should play a role with a repeat of that effort on these terms. Maturing MARINA has a bit to find on that form but was hampered at a crucial stage and may well have finished closer, so could improve. JACQUELINE and MISS SMARTY PANTS both acquitted themselves well in a similar contest over course and distance last start and off lower marks should be competitive again. SCENTED MISTRESS will enjoy a return to this trip having run on well to finish ahead of MAJOR ATTRACTION over shorter last time. The latter is untried over this distance but has hinted that she may have more to offer stepping up in trip now. Tricky!

#4 Marina, #9 Fynbos, #5 Scented Mistress, #8 Major Attraction

Kenilworth, 17.02.2021, Race 8, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R55.000, 17:10GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky. Improving ROYAL WATCH wasn’t winning out of turn when stepping up to this trip for the first time. He would’ve strengthened and improved during a subsequent layoff but is likely to lack race sharpness on his return. Stable companion WARRIOR fits a similar profile but has fitness on his side and should be competitive with further progress expected. Fellow 3yo TRIPPLE JET won a stronger race under a light weight when going this trip on his handicap debut. He was penalised the minimum two merit rating points and is likely to have more to offer. MAXIUMUS, IRISH TRACTOR and FLYING GRACE form part of a strong 3yo contingent, but a bigger threat may come from another well-bred sophomore in maturing CAPTAIN WHO, who is also likely to improve going this distance. DESTIN and ANECDOTE add further intrigue.
