Kenilworth Preview – 13 February

RACE BY RACE PREVIEWS: KENILWORTH@2021.02.13

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 1, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R80.000, 13:15GMT+2

Race Summary: Tricky opener. BENJAMIN had been costly to follow prior to a break but returns with blinkers on and has been gelded, so could make amends. SABINA’S PRODIGY fits a similar profile but is held on form by that rival. BUMRAH and PIKETBERG ALLEY both ran well over this course and distance when last seen and should be competitive if building on those efforts. JACK THE JETSETTER showed improvement returning from a rest when staying on over shorter last time and could also feature if confirming. PREEMPTIVE STRIKE is open to improvement with blinkers fitted after a fair local introduction. OLD TAWNY failed to build on a promising debut effort in his only subsequent start but could reaffirm after gelding and may represent value for an in-form jockey-trainer combination.

Selections:

#9 Old Tawny, #10 Preemptive Strike, #2 Bumrah, #3 Piketberg Alley

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 2, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R65.000, 13:55GMT+2

Race Summary: QUEEN NIYABAH has been costly to follow but has run 2nd twice under Domeyer and could go one better reunited with that rider and with blinkers now fitted for the first time. FLY TO RIO was 2nd over track and trip last start, ahead of improving ARENDELLE. The latter, though, has more scope to improve and could turn the tables. FLASHLIGHT has rediscovered her form since relocating to the Western Cape and should have a role to play too. HOST OF ANGELS and ORANGE BOWL are others who could improve to make their presence felt. Watch the betting on the newcomers, particularly well-bred GRANNY’S MOON.

Selections:

#1 Queen Niyabah, #5 Flashlight, #11 Granny’s Moon, #4 Arendelle

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 3, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R65.000, 14:30GMT+2

Race Summary: Improving CRIMSON PRINCESS was a close-up 3rd over track and trip with blinkers fitted last start and is likely to play another leading role with a repeat of that effort. RESPECTABLE MISS and HELEN’S BLUSH are closely matched and both have the form to make their presence felt. However, a bigger threat could come from likely improver ROSE PRINCESS who has shown ability in 2 sprints but is bred for this step up in trip. INBETWEEN DREAMS and PRINCESS OF WINTER have the credentials to earn a cheque, while well-related AGAIN AND AGAIN should have more to offer after a sprint introduction.

Selections:

#1 Crimson Princess, #8 Rose Princess, #4 Inbetween Dreams, #3 Helen’s Blush

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 4, Gallops, 1600m, Turf, R80.000, 15:05GMT+2

Race Summary: Open. CRACK IT OPEN and BEY SUYAY gave better accounts over slightly further last time and should be competitive from inside alleys if building on that improvement. SHOTOVER JET has been getting closer in recent starts and warrants respect in his peak outing over a distance that should suit. ATTORNEY GENERAL has been threatening to shed his maiden tag over further but could appreciate a quicker tempo over this shorter trip, so shouldn’t be discounted. GRAND ESCAPE was run out of it late having been used up to overcome a wide draw last time and could pose more of a threat if ridden with more restraint from another unfavourable wide gate. Improving SON OF SILK will enjoy the step up to this distance and from a neat draw could have the measure of these rivals.

Selections:

#14 Son Of Silk, #10 Grand Escape, #1 Crack It Open, #2 Bey Suyay

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 5, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R75.000, 15:40GMT+2

Race Summary: Good race. Stablemates ADIOS AMIGOS and DOPPIO ORO scored last time out but face tougher tasks given their resultant penalties, although the progressive former should be competitive again from an inside gate. Fellow last-start winners MAGICAL MIDLANDS and SOMERSET MAUGHAM (gelded now) are also likely to improve after respective layoffs and warrant inclusion. STAR OF THE SOUTH was unlucky not to get closer last time (his first start after gelding) but would have come on since and should pose more of a threat on these terms. PATH OF CHOICE and ZEB make some appeal too, racing off reduced marks. IZAPHA has more scope than most and could improve to make his presence felt. Tricky!

Selections:

#5 Star Of The South, #2 Adios Amigos, #1 Magical Midlands, #4 Somerset Maugham

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 6, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R85.000, 16:15GMT+2

Race Summary: Good race and one likely to be run at a genuine pace with CAPTAIN FLINDERS and SPECTRA FORCE both expected to go forward. The latter may need some respite from the handicapper before he’s seen to best effect, while the in-form former should pose more of a threat on these terms and over this trip. He finished behind progressive 3yo FIREALLEY (2.5kg worse off) last time out and there should be little between the pair on these terms. KNIGHTS TEMPLAR could have the race run to suit so is capable of contesting the outcome.

Selections:

#7 Firealley, #3 Captain Flinders, #1 Knights Templar, #4 Spectra Force

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 7, Gallops, 1800m, Turf, R85.000, 16:50GMT+2

Race Summary: JAILHOUSE ROCK caught the eye when running on well over shorter when returning from a rest and ought to have come on since, so should go close with improved fitness on his side. VIKRAM has been competing in stronger races since his return and could have more to offer at this level, despite shouldering a big weight. Consistent SUDDEN STAR rarely runs a bad race and should get closer to last-start conqueror NIGHT SONG on these terms. The progressive latter is likely to be prominent for a long way but could face competition for the lead from FORT AGOPIAN who could pose a threat under bottom weight.

Selections:

#5 Jailhouse Rock, #7 Night Song, #6 Sudden Star, #8 Fort Agopian

Kenilworth, 13.02.2021, Race 8, Gallops, 2000m, Turf, R80.000, 17:25GMT+2

Race Summary: Competitive concluding contest. NOMORE MR NICEGUY stayed on well from a long way back over a shorter trip last time, suggesting he’ll have more to offer stepped up to this trip. Well-bred TALES OF US finished ahead of that rival in what was his 2nd start after a rest and gelding, so is likely to pose more of a threat to improving VAN GOGH who caught the eye when running on from a hopeless position over 1800m last time. He’ll come on with experience and should enjoy the extra, so rates the runner to beat. Recently gelded CAPTAINS WORLD and DOUBLE AGENT could also show more going this distance and make their presence felt too.

Selections:

#11 Van Gogh, #7 Tales Of Us, #1 Nomore Mr Niceguy, #2 Captains World

Best Win: #11 VAN GOGH

Best Value Bet:

Best Longshot: #9 OLD TAWNY
