Apprentice ZX Tan suspended two months

Z X Tan has been dealt a two-month suspension.

The Inquiry into the tactics adopted on STAR EFFECT (App ZX Tan) in Race 5 at the Singapore Turf Club Meeting on Friday, 27 March 2020 was concluded on Wednesday, 01 April 2020.  After taking evidence from App Tan (pictured), his Master, Trainer J Lim, and Trainer J Lim’s Assistant Trainer, Mr R Lim, App Tan was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) in that he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

The specifics of the charge being that:

  • after the start, he severely checked his mount,
  • then covered unnecessary ground throughout the race; and
  • rode with insufficient vigour between the 500m and the 200m.

The Stewards did not accept submissions that the he lost his balance at the start or that the saddle slipped to any degree to cause the rider any disadvantage.

Each specific either in isolation or in combination resulted in a breach of the Rule.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account his record, the nature of the charge, his relative inexperience, his personal circumstances and submissions from App Tan that he has been engaged to ride at the Singapore Race Meetings on Friday, 03 April 2020 and Friday, 10 April 2020. 

App Tan was suspended from riding in races with effect from Saturday, 11 April 2020 to Wednesday, 10 June 2020 both dates inclusive (a period of two months) and was advised of his Right of Appeal.
