S John’s suspension reduced to two months on appeal

The Panel of Stewards found Jockey S John (pictured) guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) on Friday, 08 March 2019 following an Inquiry into the ride of WONDERFUL ERA in Race 3 at the Singapore Turf Club Meeting on Friday, 08 March 2019 in that he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

The specifics of the charge being that from the 500m until the Winning Post, he failed to ride his mount with sufficient vigour and determination. When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the nature of the charge, his record, his personal circumstances and submissions from Jockey John that he has been engaged to ride at the Singapore Race Meeting on Sunday, 10 March 2019. Jockey John was suspended for a period of three months with effect from Monday, 11 March 2019 to Monday, 10 June 2019 both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

On Sunday, 10 March 2019, Jockey John exercised his Right of Appeal against the decision of the Panel of Stewards and the penalty imposed on him. He subsequently applied for a Stay of Sentence. After considering submissions from Jockey John on Monday, 11 March 2019, his application for a Stay of Sentence was granted by the Panel of Stewards.

The Appeal Panel’s Hearing of the Appeal was concluded on Tuesday, 16 April 2019.

After considering all of the evidence together with submissions from Jockey John’s Legal Counsel and the Chief Stipendiary Steward, the Appeal Panel dismissed the Appeal against the decision of the Panel of Stewards. In regards to penalty, the suspension was reduced to a period of two months from riding in races with effect from Monday, 22 April 2019 to Friday, 21 June 2019 both dates inclusive. His deposit was forfeited.
